“Young Master, it’s time to wake up. Young Master?”

“Ugh, uhaaaah! I-I’m sorry. I wasn’t dozing off… Ah…”

Woken up at the butler’s call, Rueg blurted out his words as if having a seizure, then blinked his eyes.

Ever since he started going to the imperial palace in place of Versha, Rueg had lived with perpetually sunken eyes.

Because…

“Why can’t you suddenly do something you did every day? Is your intelligence regressing or something?”

“I’m sorry…”

“Even your younger sibling could do a better job than you. How about switching and letting him come in your place from tomorrow, hmm?”

The first time he heard that, Rueg thought Felix had discovered he wasn’t actually Versha and felt like his heart was about to leap out of his chest.

‘How would he even know me? He says even if I came, I’d do better than my sister?’

Rueg stuck out his lower lip and let out a long sigh.

Honestly, Felix’s words were harsh, but even if he had a hundred mouths, Rueg had nothing to say.

“Why is it that I get so sleepy the moment I sit in front of a desk…?”

He definitely wasn’t like this in his previous life, but for some reason, as soon as he sat at a desk, drowsiness would overwhelm him. He even thought he’d done his work properly, but would make mistakes in odd places.

“I’m sure I used to be amazing at work back then…”

Every time he did a part-time job, his bosses would always say, ‘I’ve never seen anyone as good at work as you!’ and praised him a lot. How did things end up like this?

Muttering with his lips sticking out, Rueg lay on his side in bed, pulling the blanket up to his neck again.

“Young Master, it’s time for you to leave for work. Please wake up.”

“……”

“Didn’t you say you mustn’t be late?”

Schumann spoke in a stern voice, pulling away the blanket Rueg had covered himself with.

“Ugh, I just want to escape reality, even a little bit…!”

“Since it’s time for you to wake up, may I say something that will help you feel the reality?”

“Wh-What is it…?”

“Another IOU has arrived.”

“…WHAT?!”

Rueg shot up, yelling. Where did that crazy girl go spend money again!

His eyes ablaze, he grumbled, while Schumann, who had folded the confiscated blanket with sharp corners, spoke.

“I was joking.”

“……”

“Well then, since you’re up, wash your face and come out. I’ll prepare breakfast.”

At Schumann’s calm words, Rueg glared at him with dagger eyes. Still snorting like a bull, Rueg spoke with eyes half out of their mind.

“Schumann.”

“…Ahem. Yes, Young Master.”

“Do you, by any chance, want to go looking for my sister? Do you want to leave the warm and cozy Verdic mansion and get thrown out into the cold empire beyond?”

As Rueg huffed and puffed, Schumann stroked his mustache, which was curled at both ends, and replied.

“Recently, the Verdic mansion hasn’t been all that warm. Due to financial difficulties, some rooms can’t even run the furnace.”

“……”

“And if I’m not around, the Verdic family finances would collapse completely. Do you really want me to personally go and look for the young lady?”

At Schumann’s words, Rueg opened his mouth slightly. The Verdic family might not have been that wealthy, but it was famous for making sure its servants slept warm.

“You can’t even run the furnace…?”

Rueg, looking shocked, slid off the bed.

“I’ll… go earn some money… It’s fine if my room is a little cold, so just use the firewood from my room…”

Mumbling like someone who had lost his soul, Rueg staggered off toward the bathroom.

Watching his retreating back, Schumann cleared his throat awkwardly.

“Goodness. I didn’t think he’d actually believe that…”

It seemed that, unlike Versha, Rueg still didn’t know how harsh the world could be.

Nod, nod.

Half-asleep as he got out of the carriage, Rueg stifled a huge yawn that threatened to split his mouth wide open.

‘If he sees me yawning, he’ll probably say I look ugly again.’

Clearing his throat with a short cough, Rueg stepped out of the carriage in a composed manner. Today, I absolutely won’t doze off while working. Steeling his resolve, he headed straight for the Crown Prince’s room.

Rueg’s first task every morning, as soon as he arrived at work, was to wake Felix before 7:30 a.m.

“I think I know now why my sister used to curse up a storm every time she went to work…”

And he had to come in even earlier than Versha did.

Rueg, who had only splashed water on his face, walked down the corridor with his lips stuck out in a pout.
