A World Where You All Are The Villains - Chapter 10.1
“…….”
If this were the Edith I know, she’d either be fuming with anger by now, or at the very least, yelling and crying.
Was it because he didn’t get the reaction he wanted?
With a somewhat dazed look, he muttered,
“…Memory loss?”
“That’s right.”
“You… don’t remember me?”
“Yeah.”
A heavy silence fell over the table.
Vincent rested his chin on his hand and quietly observed me.
But only for a moment.
“Pfft… Puhahaha—!”
All of a sudden, loud laughter filled the drawing room.
“What? Amnesia—?”
“……”
“All you could come up with with that stupid head of yours is amnesia, Edith? Ahaha!”
“……”
“Ah, sorry, sorry. It’s just so funny… heh, seriously, you’re hilarious.”
He must have really found it funny, because Vincent even wiped away tears as he kept chuckling.
I stared at him with a blank face.
Honestly, I didn’t care whether he believed me or not, and I was starting to get annoyed.
My nose was itching like I was about to sneeze.
‘Should I open the window again? No, I’ll be getting up soon anyway.’
Maybe he noticed I was thinking about something else, because he slowly stopped laughing.
“Alright. Enough with the jokes now…”
“……”
“Where’s Llewellyn?”
As if all the laughter on his face a moment ago had been a facade, he looked at me with eyes so cold they were chilling.
At his abrupt question, I asked back in confusion.
“The Purifier? Why would you look for her here?”
“Cut the crap, this act is boring.”
“I’m not acting.”
“So I’m supposed to believe you lost your memories or whatever nonsense? If that’s the case, you should have at least pretended to be surprised when I used my ability earlier, Edith.”
“……”
“You not smart enough to think that far?”
The way he skillfully trampled over the other person with his tone made anger well up inside me.
But I gritted my teeth and held it in.
If I got angry here, it would only entertain him.
“I told you I was surprised, Vincent. And the fact that you’re an Awakener who can control wind, I already heard it from the butler.”
“……”
“It’d be rude to ask a guest who they are when you say you don’t remember them.”
When I answered calmly, Vincent let out a hollow laugh.
“The butler didn’t tell you what you and I are to each other?”
“Well, he did say we’ve known each other for thirteen years, but…”
At those words, his expression immediately turned arrogant, as if to say, “So what are you going to do about all those years?” or, “Let’s see how long you can pretend not to know.”
I scratched the bridge of my nose and muttered as if to myself.
“Is that important?”
“…What?”
“Seeing you today, it seems like we weren’t all that close anyway.”
“What…”
For Edith to deny their relationship was something the original Edith could never have done.
She was the one who desperately clung to that thirteen-year bond.
Vincent, who knew this better than anyone, looked at me in disbelief and finally burst out,
“You, you’ve known me for thirteen years, Edith! You’ve been chasing after me since you were seven until just a little while ago, and now you say something like that?!”
“Really? That’s surprising. You came to see someone who almost died and all you do is throw insults though. I was starting to wonder what kind of terrible relationship we had.”
“……!”
At my blatantly sarcastic remark, his mouth finally snapped shut.
Now, maybe, he was starting to believe that I really had lost my memories.
In his puppy-like eyes, there was a hint of unfamiliarity.
“Unfortunately, I really don’t know where the woman called Llewellyn is. Of course, I heard that I used to hate her. I understand why you’d be suspicious of me.”
“……”
“But from now on, that’ll never happen again. So, for old time’s sake, I hope you’ll just let it go. You were my long-time friend, so you can do that much, right, Vincent?”
I thought that was a pretty good way to wrap things up.
To be honest, I wanted to say, “Believe whatever the hell you want,” and just leave, but from Vincent’s perspective, I was nothing more than the wicked woman who tried to kidnap Llewellyn.
‘With that temper, he might just snap and use his ability all of a sudden… that’s a bit scary…’
But it seemed Vincent didn’t see it that way.
“Ha! Even shamelessness should have its limits… You almost killed someone, and now you say, ‘Just forget it’?”
He let out a sharp, incredulous laugh, then glared at me as if he wanted to kill me.
“Edith Blake. Fine, I get that you’re not in your right mind since you only just woke up.”
“……”
“But think before you speak. Don’t just blurt out whatever comes to mind. What are you going to do when your memory comes back? Planning to never see my face again?”
I was speechless.
Isn’t that exactly what I should be saying to him?
With a dumbfounded face, I shot back,
“You almost killed someone too, didn’t you?”
“What?”
“You saved Llewellyn and just ignored me, like I didn’t even exist, so I almost died. Did you think I wouldn’t know that?”
Did he never consider that Edith might say something like this if she woke up?
‘Just how stupid did he think she was?’
As his face went deathly pale, as if I’d touched his greatest nerve, I was just left dumbfounded.
