A World Where You All Are The Villains - Chapter 12.2
Running into each other again would only make things more awkward for both of us.
‘…Maybe I shouldn’t have said all that?’
Thinking back to my conversation with Vincent, I regretted it, just a little.
I’d lashed out in the heat of the moment, saying whatever came to mind, but looking back, it was only a loss for me.
What if he held a grudge and actually used his ability on me…!
‘Should I go and apologize, try to act friendly now?’
Dragging my feet, I let out a long sigh and shook my head.
“As if that would work…”
I hadn’t wanted things to spiral this far out of control, but honestly, this was something that had to happen sooner or later.
He needed to know that the Edith Blake he once knew—the girl who liked him so desperately she didn’t know what to do—was gone.
“Hah… Being a villain is so exhausting…”
Feeling as if all my strength had drained away, I trudged off toward Edith’s—no, my—room.
Behind me, Ethan’s voice faded into the distance as he gave an order.
“…Where’s Yusa? Find her and send her to the second floor…”
* * *
Vincent, who’d been watching Edith disappear down the second-floor corridor, soon lowered his head and looked straight ahead.
“Brother.”
(T/N: They’re not actually brothers; ‘Hyung’ can also be used between two close male friends)
Ethan, who’d just been asking the butler about the healer’s whereabouts, glanced coolly at the man approaching him.
“Did she hit her head or something?”
“……”
“She comes back from the dead and suddenly our Edith has lost her mind. She says she doesn’t know who I am. Can you believe that? Hah!”
Vincent let out a sharp laugh, muttering sarcastically.
At that, Ethan narrowed his eyes and quietly warned him.
“Watch your mouth. What are you all standing around for?”
At his gesture for the listening staff to clear out, the servants quickly dispersed.
As Vincent fell into thought, he tilted his head to the side.
“I’m sure I didn’t see her fall, though…”
“……”
“Did you, Brother?”
“Why are you here?”
Ethan didn’t answer his silly question, but threw one back at him instead.
Vincent grumbled in disbelief.
“Why do you think? I came to look for Llewellyn, of course.”
“Llewellyn isn’t here.”
“What? Then where is she?”
“I don’t know either. I checked around Tollen thinking she might have gone there to purify, but I couldn’t find her.”
“So… Llewellyn’s disappearance really isn’t Edith’s doing?”
Vincent’s gentle, puppy-like eyes widened slowly, as if shocked.
Seeing Vincent’s reaction, Ethan let out a low sigh.
“I get why you’re worried, but it’s true that she only woke up from a coma yesterday. The Duke and I both saw it with our own eyes.”
“……”
“And as for the amnesia she claims… After today, it didn’t seem like a lie.”
“Amnesia…?”
All expression drained from Vincent’s face.
He repeated the word ‘amnesia’ several times, as if it was the first time he’d heard it.
“Are you saying Edith really has amnesia? She’s not just lying to get out of trouble?”
“……”
“She doesn’t remember you?”
“…She didn’t recognize the Duke either.”
Ethan, for a moment, avoided Vincent’s gaze as he replied in a low voice.
It sounded a bit like an excuse, but Vincent didn’t seem to notice right away.
“Then… Why didn’t she show any surprise when I used my ability? If she really has amnesia, she shouldn’t remember what an Awakener is…”
“She’d already met a healer. And things like that, she could easily have heard from the staff.”
At Ethan’s retort, the Young Marquis’s barrage of questions finally ceased.
A heavy, deathly silence fell over the two men, both lost in thought.
After a moment, Ethan narrowed his eyes and looked at Vincent.
“And you. Why did you come here and pull a stunt like that all of a sudden?”
“What did I do?”
“Did you forget she has a serious pollen allergy?”
Even without naming names, it was clear who he meant.
At that, Vincent’s golden eyes trembled as if struck by an earthquake.
“It’s a sensitive period. Don’t come all the way here just to cause trouble.”
Ethan gestured at the staff moving about, his displeasure obvious.
Who knew which gossip would spread about what happened today?
It wouldn’t do for the Duke, already upset over his daughter’s near-death, to hear about it.
“……”
Vincent opened his mouth as if to reply, but shut it again.
He repeated this several times before finally forcing out a question.
“…Yeah.”
“……”
“Why did I…”
“……”
“…forget that, Brother?”
