Eston, her entire face now pitch-black, seemed deeply shocked as she looked at her reflection in the mirror. Unlike yesterday, she didn’t even try to heal herself right away, nor did she attempt to pinch her nose.

The horror and fear cast over her eyes were unmistakable.

I silently handed her a handkerchief.

“……”

Only then did Eston regain her senses and take the handkerchief from me, immediately pressing it to her nose to stop the bleeding.

But the blood didn’t stop easily.

Before long, the small white handkerchief began to turn completely black.

“Are you… going to report me to the Security Bureau?”

Whether she knew what was happening or not, Eston began to say something utterly useless under the circumstances.

“My younger brother… My brother had a fit and bit two villagers.”

“……”

“Milady!”

Thud!

“I’ll do everything you say. I’ll do whatever you tell me to do… Just please, don’t report me!”

Suddenly, Eston dropped to her knees at my feet and began begging.

I gazed down at her for a moment, then quietly answered,

“Even if I don’t report you, you can’t hide your rampage.”

“If I’m not there right now, my brother will be burned alive by Count Frederick…!”

Frederick?

That was a familiar name, one I felt like I’d heard before. I hesitated for a moment, but quickly shook it off.

Drip, drip…

Eston’s blood, which the blackened handkerchief couldn’t absorb, began to overflow onto the floor.

And at the same time.

“Evil people. Damn bastards…! When they were begging on their knees for me to save their families…!”

“……”

“And now, just because my brother bit someone, how can they report him right away? How could they…!”

Suddenly, Eston began muttering incoherent things, her eyes losing focus.

Hallucinations, delusions.

Abnormal outbursts of anger and stress. These were classic symptoms right before rampage.

I checked the number above Eston’s head and calmly tried to soothe her.

“Eston, calm down.”

“Why did I go so far as to let myself be corroded by miasma just to help them? I should’ve just let them die. If I hadn’t wasted my healing power on those people, maybe I could have saved Theo.”

“Eston.”

“The only family I have left is Theo… Why did a Gate have to open again? Wasn’t it enough that it took Mom and Dad?”

No matter how many times I tried to call her back, it was useless.

She was now hanging her head, her body trembling all over.

Splat!

Her hand, which had been pressing her nose, fell limply to her side.

The blackened handkerchief hit the floor with a wet smack.

Drip, drip, drip…

On top of that, a stream of dark-red blood poured down like water from a faucet.

‘Damn.’

I bit my lip, keeping a close eye on Eston.

I’d only meant to give her a bit of a warning.

But it seemed I’d truly struck a nerve.

“Why does all the misfortune always have to fall on me? I just want it to stop. Just because I’m an Awakener doesn’t mean my power is infinite!”

“Alright. I promise I won’t report you. So please, stop, Eston.”

“Ah, my head hurts… Everyone, please just shut up!”

“Eston!”

“Why do you keep tormenting me like this! Why, why, why—!”

Eston was now clutching her head with both hands, screaming in agony.

‘If this keeps up, she’ll rampage for sure!’

I glanced anxiously at the door.

Whether the butler brought people at the sound of the commotion, or didn’t come at all, either would be a problem.

‘Everyone might find out I’m a Purifier.’

Of course, that’s assuming I can use my original ability.

If I couldn’t…

‘I’ll die a dog’s death!’

If I couldn’t purify Eston’s miasma, there was no way to stop an Awakener’s rampage.

True, there was Ethan, an S-Class Awakener, in the house, so the damage would be less than other cases…

But as the one standing right in front of Eston, I’d be the first to die.

“……?”

Just then, I realized the atmosphere around us had become eerily quiet.

It was as I hurriedly turned back to Eston.

“M-Milady…”

She had stopped screaming and was now staring up at me in a daze.

Her pupils were huge, pitch-black, and spread wide.

Black veins were crawling out from around her eyes, making her face look like something from a nightmare.

On top of that, not only from her nose but also from her eyes, black liquid was pouring out in streams.

Anyone could see at a glance that she was completely overtaken by miasma, the very picture of an Awakener in full rampage.
