An empty room, now that even Ethan had left.

I stared into the air with trembling eyes and muttered,

“Edith… was an Awakened?”

Awakening usually happens around puberty.

However, there are rare cases where abilities manifest belatedly after becoming an adult. That was exactly my case.

Edith could have been such a case as well.

The problem was, there was no mention of this anywhere in this damned novel.

“Did she not know her ability had manifested? Or maybe, because she couldn’t tell what her ability was, she just kept it secret for the time being…?”

I considered a few possibilities, then shook my head.

Both were unlikely.

There’s no way she wouldn’t know, when the numbers appear so obviously.

Even if she didn’t know exactly what it was, Edith’s personality wasn’t the type to keep it hidden.

If anything, she’d be more likely to shout it to the whole world.

“Don’t tell me… she died and came back to life in the miasma?”

At that moment, a certain possibility flashed through my mind.

― They said she was found in the jaws of a monster. Is that possible?

In the novel, it’s never explained exactly how Edith died.

But whatever it was, Edith died exposed to the miasma, and I was brought back to life by possessing her body.

Which means.

“…The conditions for awakening were fulfilled.”

Could something like this really happen?

It didn’t make any sense, but it was a plausible theory, and I let out a hollow laugh.

“Hah. Should I be happy about this, or not…”

If the real Edith were here, she would have been absolutely ecstatic.

Wasn’t this the very wish she’d had all her life?

And now, she could even see the rampage meter of Awakened…

Awakened feared going berserk far more than dying in battle.

Of course. Who would want to be hailed as a hero in troubled times, only to end up as a notorious murderer and die like a dog?

What’s more, the higher the grade of the ability, the greater the risk of going on rampage.

Because the higher the energy metabolism, the faster the miasma erodes you when you use your power.

‘That’s why our S-Class male leads were all written as being extremely sensitive.’

If it had been Edith, she would have revealed this ability and gladly used it for the male leads.

Not because she was absurdly kind or because she loved them.

But because, after so long suffering neglect and deprivation, she would have wanted to prove her usefulness to everyone.

No matter how vicious the villainess, she was still just a kid, barely come of age.

‘Wasn’t she just twenty years old now?’

Recalling Edith’s current age, I gave a bitter laugh.

“I’m sorry.”

In a rather dry voice, I apologized to the real Edith, wherever she might be, dead or alive.

Maybe this is the chance to finally get all the attention and affection you so desperately wanted.

“I’m just not the sentimental type.”

I wouldn’t give anything—not my power, not my feelings—to those who treated me like crap.

Whether it was abilities or emotions.

“Sixty-four percent, huh…”

I recalled what I’d just seen with Ethan.

The miasma swirling around his waist.

‘When it reaches all the way to his head and hits 100%, he’d go on rampage.’

With a crooked smile, I muttered,

“At that level, it should still be bearable, shouldn’t it?”

Seriously, you could have shown a little kindness to your miraculously resurrected stepsister.

If you had, I might have at least given you the advice to hurry up and go see Llewellyn.

No. He wasn’t even worth that.

Before Edith died, he’d already turned his back on her, hadn’t he?

“Shameless bastard.”

And now he dares talk about me becoming a monster and the like.

In the novel, it said the male leads felt guilty about Edith’s death, but that’s nothing but a load of bull.

To me, Ethan Blake was a sociopath.

He probably felt relieved that the Duke’s real daughter was finally dead.

So how annoyed must he be, now that I’m alive and well before his very eyes?

“…But what the hell was that scene I saw earlier?”

At that moment, I suddenly remembered the vision I’d seen just before my ability manifested.

Ethan, shirtless, clinging at Edith’s feet, moaning.

And Edith, so gently caressing that guy…

“Ugh, gross!”

Ugh, ugh!

I grimaced and shook my head vigorously to rid myself of the memory.

That kind of scene wasn’t even in the original, and considering the way Ethan just looked at me with pure contempt, it made even less sense.

“Was it just a delusion, something left over from being jealous of Llewellyn?”

I couldn’t understand it, but maybe that’s possible.

Maybe she dreamed of becoming a Purifier herself after seeing Llewellyn.

But why him, of all people?

“Ha… I give up.”

Clutching my throbbing head, I collapsed weakly onto the bed.

I’d only just woken up, but so much had already happened.

“And why is the story already veering off from the original?”

Isn’t it a bit too much to expect from someone who’s only transmigrated for two days?

I squeezed my eyes shut, as if to escape reality.

When I opened them again, I hoped this would all turn out to be a dream.

If so, at least it’d be a pretty good story idea for a dream.

‘If I wake up, I’ll send a proposal to Dr. Kang to develop a rampage meter…’
