‘…What if it was a situation where there was no hope, so there was nothing to feel regret about?’

That’s how it was now.

You would think he’d ask for another attempt at treatment, but Cielo had the look of someone who had already accepted that he wouldn’t get better.

‘Could it be… is that why he rejected me?’

Oscar had sensed something was off. Until now, Cielo had accepted everything, but the moment things started to deepen, he had drawn a sharp line between them.

‘So that’s why he kept pretending not to notice Lord Doberman’s feelings too…?’

Because he was going to die anyway?

For the sake of those who would be left behind?

As soon as that thought settled in Oscar’s mind, he clenched his teeth. Rage surged so strongly that he felt dizzy.

‘You said you wanted to be loved.’

And yet, you’re just sitting there, waiting for the day you die.

He couldn’t accept it.

It wasn’t sadness anymore, it was anger. His insides twisted with frustration.

What on earth could he do to give Cielo the love he wanted?

He didn’t want Cielo to simply accept death, even if it was right in front of him. He wanted to make him look away from it, to fight against it, to want to live.

“Oscar, your expression doesn’t look good. Is it because of what happened earlier? You don’t need to worry too much. I am getting better, aren’t I?”

Liar.

Even a fool could tell that Cielo’s condition wasn’t improving. He was clearly wasting away with each passing day.

At twenty, he had still had some softness in his cheeks, but even that had faded now, leaving his face sunken. His body was even lighter than it had been a year ago.

Oscar could see it plainly. The beauty in Cielo’s face was losing its vitality little by little.

He looked like someone walking steadily toward death.

Suddenly, Oscar was overcome with fear.

‘I don’t want this…’

The thought of Cielo dying was unbearable.

Oscar didn’t know how to love someone properly either. Up until now, all he had done was cling to Cielo and demand his attention.

He had no idea how to make Cielo happy other than acting spoiled and trying to get noticed.

Looking quietly at Cielo’s face, Oscar lowered his head and gently pressed his lips to the corner of his eye.

Swallowing back the fury rising inside him, he forced his voice to remain soft.

“You’re right, Master. I’m still young.”

He had thought that completing the coming-of-age ceremony would instantly make him an adult. But the truth was, he was still a child who couldn’t even figure out one way to make Cielo smile.

“That’s why… I want to be as stubborn as I possibly can.”

He wanted to cry, beg Cielo not to leave, and force the will to live into his hands.

“Don’t die. I don’t want a world without you in it, Master.”

That was all Oscar could do right now.

It wasn’t until four days later that Cielo and Oscar were finally able to leave the cave.

It was thanks to Ryan, who had safely escaped the monsters, returned with reinforcements, and launched a search for the missing pair. Apparently, they had been hiding so well that finding them was the hardest part.

“Thank you. You must’ve been cold.”

“Cold? You were the one surviving in that freezing cave. That’s much more impressive.”

Ryan said that as he rubbed Cielo’s cheeks with exaggerated fondness.

But before long, his expression darkened.

“There’s something strange about this. We confirmed that monster activity in this area had stopped. So how did so many of them show up all of a sudden?”

Deep in thought, Ryan continued absentmindedly pinching Cielo’s cheek. There was hardly any flesh left to pinch, but Ryan always liked touching Cielo’s face like this.

Cielo, who had allowed his cheek to rest in Ryan’s large hand, also had something bothering him.

‘That voice I heard… no, was it really a hallucination?’

Though it had been mixed with the monstrous roars, the tone and phrasing had definitely belonged to Sol and Pielago.

“I have a question. Can monsters understand human language…?”

Just as Cielo turned to ask Ryan—

Crash! A loud noise rang out as a bird slammed into the clinic window.

Startled, Cielo turned his head and locked eyes with the bird clinging to the glass.

Then, the bird’s head twisted in a grotesque motion, and it stared straight at him.

“When are you coming, Cielo?”

“Are you only going to come after your beloved disciple dies?”
