Only a month had passed since he entered this body, but by now he had gained some understanding of the people in the mansion.

Enoch quickly relaxed his expression. Then, to reassure the butler standing with his head lowered, he patted the man’s shoulder several times. He headed toward his study.

“…What is all this now?”

Enoch, who had been walking briskly, stopped at the sight of people standing in long lines along the corridor walls. Dressed in uniforms with swords at their waists, they were all members of the escort belonging to the distinguished person who had suddenly invaded the ducal mansion.

He saw the same spectacle every time the troublesome guy came, yet somehow there seemed to be even more of them today. Swallowing a sigh, Enoch frowned.

It was not as though he did not know how exalted the man’s station was… but he always overdid things.

What was this, an attempt to announce to the entire world, ‘Look at how important I am’? Clicking his tongue inwardly, Enoch strolled between them.

Two men stood facing forward before the study. The man in the white formal uniform was Haynes Deres, commander of the White Hawks. The man in the black uniform was Leo Genher, commander of the Black Lions.

Both were trusted retainers of Grand Duke Adelio Chezaser, who came to House Laochenes at all hours of the day. Enoch looked from one man to the other, glared at the door, and spoke in a low voice.

“…Aren’t you tired of doing this?”

The two men guarding the study door looked at each other and answered.

“I am.”

“Hmm. Not really?”

Their answers came very quickly. Haynes, dressed in white, remained expressionless. But Leo, dressed in black and smiling broadly, looked as though he found the situation unbearably entertaining.

Enoch let out a deep sigh. He spoke in the tone of an earnest plea.

“I beg you, sirs. Please try to persuade him. Neither you nor I can enjoy seeing each other’s faces like this every day.”

Once again, the two men responded in opposite ways.

“Do you think I have not spoken to His Highness? I tell him every day, every hour, and every moment.”

“I don’t care whether he comes or not. Since we’re here, I get to see a beauty’s face. I like it.”

“……”

Expressionless, Enoch looked from one to the other. Then he stared at Leo’s smiling face, repeatedly clenching and opening his fist.

He wanted to punch that sly face. Just as he considered striking him once like a madman, pretending nothing had happened, and dashing inside, the door opened without a sound.

Startled, Enoch whipped his head toward it. Through the gap, he glimpsed the face of a black-haired man. One corner of the man’s mouth rose in a smile.

Enoch had seen the face more than enough over the past few days, but he couldn’t help being astonished each time. He swallowed dryly.

When Enoch saw the other man’s eyes curve in a smile, he instinctively faltered and took a step back. For a moment, he merely blinked, distracted by the hair gleaming where the sunlight struck it. Then Enoch abruptly came to his senses.

He hurriedly assumed the proper posture and tried to lower his head in greeting. But the man moved first.

Extending only an arm through the doorway, he seized Enoch and pulled him inside. The force dragged Enoch into the room in an instant. The study door slammed shut behind him.

After it closed, Leo looked at Haynes with puzzled eyes. Haynes had already turned away again as though he had no interest whatsoever in what happened inside.

Leo patted Haynes on the shoulder.

“Wow. His Highness the Grand Duke is incredibly forceful. Don’t you think?”

“Do not even speak such irreverence aloud.”

“Hmph. Why so serious?”

Haynes glared at Leo for the muttered remark. The butler, who had belatedly followed Enoch, still hadn’t grasped the situation and could only swallow repeatedly as he stared at the tightly shut door.

“Your Highness, wait… Urgh!”

Meanwhile, Enoch, who had been dragged into the study in an instant, was shoved against the wall beside the door. The wrist caught in the man’s grasp ached.

Enoch tightened his lips and shook his wrist, signaling for him to let go at once. But the man only narrowed his pale blue eyes and smiled at him from close range.

Enoch clenched his teeth once, then spoke.

“Your Highness. That hurts.”

Enoch looked up at the taller man, Adelio, Grand Duke Chezaser, as he spoke. But Adelio still did not answer.

Enoch patiently tried again.

“Your Highness. Would you please let go of my hand?”
