Absurd and preposterous words swirled across the plaza. Everyone seemed to have lost their minds, consumed entirely by madness.

The old woman who had been singled out as a witch looked as though she lacked the strength to even speak properly. With her head snapped down completely, she crouched forward, unable to let out so much as a groan. Her hair was a disheveled, unkempt mess, and her entire body was stained with dark blue bruises.

Even in that state, the crowd engulfed by rage showed no sign of backing away. Stones flew in continuously from all directions. Someone spat, while someone else wailed and poured down curses.

“What do you think you are doing? Stop this instant!”

Hurriedly stepping out of the carriage, I shouted toward them with all my might. As if startled by the sudden voice, a momentary silence fell over the plaza. Countless gazes from the estate residents shifted toward me all at once.

“The Grand Consort, Your Highness…? H- How did you come all the way here…”

“Are you trying to help the witch? Why on earth?”

“……Could it be that the rumors were true?”

An uneasy murmuring began to stir among the crowd. Lord Mildred adjusted his grip on his sword with a highly tense face. Right then, someone among the villagers muttered.

“It- It is the demon… The evil spirit that gathered the witches and cast the curse has arrived.”

It was a small but clear and distinct voice. The estate residents flinched as if doused with cold water and glanced at me.

Eyes gripped by anxiety and terror were wavering relentlessly. The voice that singled me out spread through the crowd in an instant.

“That is right, it is a demon. That person made us eat the devil’s fruit. The demons appeared right after that.”

“The Grand Consort was the demon of Walpurgis all along…”

“Was the story that His Excellency the Grand Duke’s disappearance was also the demon’s doing actually true…”

“I, I saw it. Last night, that person was definitely flying through the sky and gathering the evil spirits!”

A few of the estate residents abruptly took a step toward me. Heavy wooden clubs were held in their hands.

Those with eyes gleaming with a strange sheen surrounded me in an instant. Lord Mildred quickly covered me and issued a stern warning.

“How dare you attempt to threaten the Grand Consort, Your Highness? All of you, stand back.”

“Sir Knight… Is the story true that His Excellency the Grand Duke was dragged away by a demon and cannot return?”

“What? Which bastards are spouting such nonsense!”

The startled Mildred gritted his teeth and bellowed, but the commotion only grew louder and louder. Gazes soaked in madness gradually turned away from the old woman thrown onto the execution pyre and toward me.

“If we do not burn the demon of Walpurgis to death, His Excellency the Grand Duke will never be able to return.”

“The curse cast upon the estate will never vanish…”

“Hurry, we must hang that thing on the pyre immediately!”

“Give us back His Excellency the Grand Duke, you demon bastard!”

It took only a fraction of a second for the spark created by the mob mentality to flare up into a massive blaze. The rage that had been directed toward the old woman on the pyre until just a moment ago veered in a new direction. Harsh profanities and curses rained down toward me.

“Block them. Protect the Grand Consort, Your Highness!”

Mildred stood in front of me and gave orders to the soldiers. The escort guards drew their swords all at once. However, a crowd of people was already rushing in from all sides. A few soldiers were simply not enough to hold them all back. Wooden clubs and chunks of stone flew in from here and there. Hands that lunged to snatch me were barely intercepted by a sword blade right before my nose.

An incalculably vast crowd thronged toward me relentlessly. The eyes of the estate residents holding pickaxes and torches were filled with despair, confusion, and madness.

Before I knew it, I was separated from Lord Mildred’s side and left completely alone. While dodging the stones, pieces of iron, and flames pouring from everywhere, I became hopelessly entangled in the pandemonium. Screams and wails loud enough to tear my eardrums filled the air.

Amidst that chaos, a silver sword blade flashing in a corner of my vision suddenly caught my sight, flying straight toward me. Without even a moment’s chance to dodge, the cold blade plunged down at me. I instinctively closed my eyes tightly.

“…….”

However, nothing happened.
