During that time, the dispatch fleet led by Walter, the son of Chief Butler Wilhelm, also frequently traveled back and forth to Port Kalhaven on the Northern Continent. Like that, while Tristan and I stayed in Hezekia, Hezekia repeatedly made stable progress.

However, neither Tristan nor I could let down our guard.

Even while Hezekia was changing, Everett steadily built up his forces in the Belforte Imperial Castle, the heart of the Rubyere Empire. The Emperor’s favor toward Liander, the Countess of Dearsby, was deep all along, and the Imperial Grandson was still a young child who was not even ten years old.

It was only natural that the support of the nobles gathered toward Everett, who was the only grown prince. At a glance, Everett’s foundation appeared solid, and it seemed to be only a matter of time before he would be invested as the Crown Prince.

In the original work, Everett ascends to the position of Crown Prince without much difficulty around this time.

Hezekia, which had still been a destitute and barren estate, had no power to push back. Even that crumbled when Tristan passed away a few years later, and Hezekia, which had been an autonomous territory, ended up becoming an estate under the direct control of the Imperial Family. Since the Emperor passed away just in time and Everett ascended the throne, the entire estate fell into Everett’s grasp. Good fortune continued for Everett, and only misfortune followed Constantine.

Though all of that could not be viewed simply as mere luck.

Constantine, who had reached his late teens, barely managed to escape from Hezekia. And from then on, he wandered throughout the Rubyere Empire, organizing a rebel army.

Although it was said that Everett lacked legitimacy due to being an illegitimate child of the previous Emperor, he was also clearly of the Imperial bloodline. Therefore, raising an army against an Emperor who had already ascended the throne was strictly an act of treason.

Even so, the reason a supporting force began to gather by the side of Constantine, who had lost the protection of the Grand Duke of Hezekia and whose base of support had collapsed, was largely due to Everett practicing tyranny.

However, besides that, there was yet another reason. It was because the rumors surrounding Everett were endless, threatening his legitimacy.

If the rumors were true, it would have become an incomparably advantageous card for Constantine. However, the truth regarding the rumors is never clearly revealed until the very end even within the original work, Chronicles of the Sword.

It was left as a realm of imagination, so to speak. I have no idea why on earth the original author did that. Did they want to pursue art?

At any rate, for my part, I had to touch upon every card that could be used, and because of that, I had been looking into things this way and that ever since the battle with the Dearsby privateer fleet three years ago.

And today, it seemed I would finally be able to see a result.

❖ ❖ ❖

A deep darkness settled low over the back alleys of the Imperial Castle, Belforte.

A fishy smell permeated by the damp air filled the gloomy streets. Wherever one’s steps reached, dirty puddles of water were scattered messily.

Wrapping my body thoroughly in a black cloak, I pulled down the hood to conceal my face deeply. It was to hide my identity, but even so, I did not have expectations from the beginning that my figure would go unnoticed in these back alleys.

Because I was an Omega, my silhouette was inevitably slender, and the jawline revealed beneath the hood was also fine and delicate. Since it was an appearance rarely seen in the back alleys where all sorts of rough incidents occurred, it was a difficult matter to avoid the murky gazes flying in from various spots.

Up to this point, I could gloss over it moderately. I must not ruin important business by causing an unnecessary commotion, and it was a matter where I just needed to endure it.

However, the problem was that whenever an unpleasant gaze was felt from behind, Tristan’s sharp gaze would sweep around the surroundings threateningly. A murderous intent occasionally flashed in the gaze brushing past the men standing with bated breath in each shadow of the back alleys.

Inadvertently growing tense, I calmed him down in a small voice.

“Tri… Rian. It will be troublesome if you cause a commotion here. The objective comes first.”

Tristan looked displeased but kept his mouth tightly shut. Instead, the one who burst out with dissatisfaction in a low voice was Gerhardt, who was following behind.

“But Ma…!”

I hurriedly cut off his words.

“Shh. Did I not tell you not to call me that… I mean… did I not?”

To the aliases we used to call each other, I had even added the setting that childhood friends had come out for a night stroll after a long time, but my own way of speaking wasn’t being corrected to begin with. Even so, calling me ‘Your Highness’ even here was too much. Though those men must have already realized that individuals unsuited for the back alleys had come out for amusement, considering us as simply the children of moderately high-ranking nobles and realizing that we were none other than ‘His Excellency’ and ‘Your Highness’ were completely different matters.
