His heart sank for a moment. A cold, chilling sweat flowed down his spine.

Valerian slowly turned his head, barely moving his trembling body.

The warehouse door was wide open.

A bluish moonlight faintly permeated the dark night. The figure of a man standing with his back to the light was clearly etched into his line of sight. Broad shoulders held straight, a stiff back, and a cloak fluttering lightly in the wind.

Tristan’s cold, gleaming blue eyes stared intensely at Valerian.

“My, My Lord… How, no, why are you here already…”

It was not supposed to be like this.

The plan was to lock the frightened Grand Consort in the basement for a few hours, then inform Tristan that the Grand Consort was in danger when the night grew deeper and more desolate.

Unlike the Grand Consort, it was unlikely that Tristan would fall into the basement just because Valerian pushed him with all his might. However, if Ruellin were trapped there, shivering with a swarm of black rats, he would go down himself without needing to be pushed.

All Valerian had to do was cover the entrance with a lid, lock it, and leave. By the time day broke and the knights noticed the anomaly and came to rescue them, they would have no choice but to face the Grand Consort couple, their flesh rotting from being infected by the plague.

Yes, that was the scenario instructed by Prince Everett. Valerian wanted to rise high. What did it matter if he wasn’t the Prince Consort? Even after the Empress passed away, Lady Dearsby could not even fill her empty seat due to her lowly origin, but she became the real power who held the Emperor in her arms and swayed the empire. In the end, wasn’t it only a matter of time before her son became the next Emperor?

He, too, could become like that. If only tonight’s events had gone according to plan.

But why did the Grand Duke appear here already? How on earth did he find out about this place?

Without realizing it, Valerian shrank his shoulders and staggered backward. His eyes widened in disbelief, and his lips parched dry.

“My Lord… P, please wait, it is a misunderstanding. What I meant, or rather, what I meant was…”

He racked his brain desperately while trembling, but he could not think of anything.

Tristan ignored him and stepped forward. The heavy footsteps echoing in the silence felt as if they were crushing Valerian. His cold gaze passed over Valerian and headed toward the basement below.

“Ruellin, are you alright? You aren’t hurt, are you?”

Silence flowed for a moment in the darkness of the basement. Soon after, the voice that followed was nothing but calm.

“It is a bit creepy, but I can endure it. I don’t know why the rats are this big. If I were even bitten, it wouldn’t be the plague, but I would collapse from losing too much blood.”

“What? Surely you weren’t bitten?”

As Tristan’s voice became urgent, laughter was heard from below. It was a light laugh, as if the ripples were gently disturbed.

“No, that was just an example. The herbs are effective. Even if they come close, they don’t dare approach my body and run away.”

Valerian’s eyes grew round. His limbs shuddered, and he got goosebumps.

However, no one paid attention to his flustered appearance. Tristan, who was gazing down calmly, raised one eyebrow slightly. The sharp edge of his eyes began to soften little by little.

“Lower the rope, quickly.”

Tristan gave an order to one of the knights who had followed him inside and was standing guard. Then, Ruellin’s voice came up from below again. His tone sounded somewhat grumpy.

“Instead of a rope, could you lower a ladder? With this body, how am I supposed to climb up a rope right now?”

“It seems you would not be able to rely on a rope to climb up even in your usual state, not just now.”

“…Are you teasing me?”

“No, I was merely stating a fact.”

A smile hung on the corners of Tristan’s lips. Valerian felt a strange sense of incongruity in all of this. He could not understand the situation unfolding before his eyes at all.

Tristan urged the knight.

“Hurry, Johannes.”

“Yes, My Lord.”

However, even before the rope could be lowered below the entrance, Tristan jumped down without hesitation.

“No, what are you doing!”

“Shh. If you make a loud noise, you will be exhausted. You must have had a hard time, so you should save your strength now, Ruellin.”
