“Yes, I was adopted by Viscount Elsworth. Was it when I was eight years old. I do not remember exactly though.”

Tristan looked at me with a subtle expression. I added what came to mind, thinking he might need more explanation.

“I was not the Viscount’s illegitimate child or blood relative. As I vaguely heard, he needed an omega, so he searched among the commoners in the territory. The Viscount’s family did not have an omega descendant suitable for a political marriage.”

I pointed to my face with my finger and grinned. It was not as good as Tristan, but this face was decent enough, was it not.

“I guess he picked me up at a young age because I looked fairly good. I did manifest as an omega as expected, but unfortunately it was a recessive one, so I was scolded quite a bit.”

I gave a shrug while smiling as if it was nothing. Honestly, it really did not matter. It was not my life anyway.

But Tristan’s expression grew more complicated. His expression made me uneasy, wondering what he was thinking. Why does it suddenly look like that.?

***

The child was raised to be thoroughly used by Viscount Elsworth.

Ruellin’s expression was as if nothing was wrong. But his calm smile looked strangely sorrowful, and Tristan suddenly felt his heart grow heavy.

The knights walking behind them also looked unsettled, their expressions wavering. Tristan wondered if everyone had misunderstood Ruellin all this time.

They believed Ruellin admired Everett and volunteered himself as a spy. However,

At some point, that attitude had completely vanished.

Tristan remembered Ruellin tearing up the Viscount’s letter right before his eyes. It was possible that the matter of Ruellin falling in love with Everett had been planned and orchestrated by the Viscount from the very beginning.

Tristan spoke cautiously.

“Then before you came to Hezekia, the reason you grew close to Everett was.”

But Ruellin waved his hand as if he did not even want to hear it and cut him off.

“No, do not even bring up that bastard. No, that prince. Did you not see his face? The more you get close to him, the harder he will stab you in the back.”

For a moment, Tristan was speechless and stared blankly at Ruellin.

Instead of the silent Tristan, Sir Gehardt tilted his head.

“What is this thing called face reading, Your Highness the Grand Consort.”

“Ah, well.”

Ruellin avoided his gaze and trailed off. A cool feeling sank into Tristan’s heart.

Ruellin’s forced smile looked somewhat bitter. It seemed he did not want to bring up a painful past.

It was obvious that he was making up an excuse with difficulty. Not wanting to trouble him further, Tristan quickly changed the subject.

“So this village is where the new maker of the sea chart lives.”

Sensing the awkward atmosphere, the knights did not ask further questions. As they moved deeper into the village, they were met with narrow dirt roads and old houses scattered in disorder.

On the faces of the villagers who glanced at Tristan’s party, traces of long poverty and hardship were etched deeply. Between dusty alleys, children in worn clothes were running around.

Maybe Ruellin once wore worn clothes like those children, starving while struggling to survive each day.

When Tristan brought up another topic, Ruellin’s expression finally brightened, and he smiled widely.

“Yes, that is right. Ah. I think it is that house.”

The place Ruellin pointed to was a small, shabby hut located in the corner of the village. The roof had decayed from time and thick moss grew on the walls. Tristan looked at Ruellin’s profile beside him, and his chest ached faintly.

It seemed the Grand Consort of Hezekia was very familiar with this neglected and poor village. As if this place was a deeply imprinted scenery from an old memory.

Perhaps he lived in this village before being adopted.

Considering Ruellin’s pride, making the resolve to return to this dark past with Tristan and even bringing the knights was not something easy. Yet Ruellin had voluntarily returned here for the sake of Hezekia.

Facing Ruellin’s bright expression that pretended nothing was wrong, Tristan felt uneasy. Something inside his chest tingled faintly, and he followed behind Ruellin with his brow faintly furrowed.

ussually, this type of misunderstandings where the mc suddenly turns into a poor neglected baby in others pov, makes the readers (at least me) think “what if its not just something they made up, but the actual backstory of the og!character??” but now, im just laughing at how they’re pitying ruellin for seemingly no reason hahah
