A quiet stillness flowed for a while.

Surprisingly, the locals did not show any signs of hostility. On the contrary, when we remained still and cautious, they hesitated slightly before carefully stepping forward. They carried no weapons, but some balanced baskets on their heads and shoulders. Among them, a young man with a well-tanned body glanced at Tristan and boldly approached, standing in front of him.

It seemed he had judged Tristan to be the leader of our group. The intense gazes of the two men met in the air. Tristan’s normally composed brow furrowed briefly. Then the young man pulled something from his waist and placed it in Tristan’s palm.

“….”

It was a brown object, long and root-like. Tristan, suddenly holding a soil-covered root, looked momentarily startled. I laughed at the expression on his face, as if asking what he was supposed to do with it.

Sir Johannes, who had been watching and assessing the situation from my side, quickly stepped forward and placed something on the man’s palm. The man’s face immediately brightened.

It was a small glass cup brought from Hezekia’s glass workshop.

“I brought several glass cups that have minor scratches and cannot be sold. This is one I used, and it seems you like it.”

While Sir Johannes whispered, the man appeared to discuss something with the other locals behind him. Then, all at once, they came forward and laid all their baskets before us.

“It seems they are giving all of this.”

“One glass cup for all of this?”

“Exactly…?”

Sir Johannes responded with a puzzled expression. Glancing into the baskets, I saw that along with the unattractive brown root in Tristan’s hand, they contained various lumps and objects. It was generous to trade so much for a single glass cup, but I wondered how we could use all of this.

As I inspected the baskets in confusion, something felt familiar. The ugliness looked strikingly familiar.

“Ah? These are potatoes and sweet potatoes!”

Excited, I dropped to my knees in front of the baskets and grabbed the roots. Though covered in mud and difficult to recognize at first, they were definitely potatoes and sweet potatoes, with a few ears of corn mixed in. Discovering this here, my joy and surprise could not be contained.

At that moment, I felt Tristan quietly approach. He peered into the basket, picked up a potato, and raised one eyebrow.

“Are these batatas? You are so fond of them?”

“Y-Yes?”

I almost dropped the potato in surprise. I looked up at Tristan in shock.

He knew what this was?

“These are not crops seen in Rubyere. When we landed on a northern island, I once saw the locals digging these from their fields. I assumed they were used as pig feed.”

“…Pig feed?”

Well, pigs would eat potatoes…

Tristan continued calmly, with a slightly amused expression.

“But why would anyone go to such lengths to gather so many just for pig feed?”

“….”

I was left speechless, just opening and closing my lips. Such a prejudiced Grand Duke! To call this magnificent food pig feed!

I could not believe he had overlooked these potatoes, even though they were right before his eyes. Even if they looked a little odd!

I could not contain my irritation and asked indignantly.

“When I asked you about this before, did you not know what potatoes were?”

“Hm?”

Tristan tilted his head, as if not understanding what I meant. Even though I was still angry, I had to admit he looked rather cute.

He gazed down at me silently and asked seriously.

“You keep saying potato. What do you mean? Was this not called batatas?”

“….”

I realized then. He did not fail to recognize the potato itself, only its name.

I let out a long sigh and pressed my palm to my forehead, murmuring to myself.

“Potatoes… batatas are not pig feed. This is food. They taste good, and above all, they are extremely nutritious.”
