In the Name of God - Chapter 53.1
As the figure’s voice continued, it felt as if the senses throughout my entire body were going numb.
The once-still air rippled incessantly like black waves.
The thing speaking to me morphed into a vague human shape and spread its arms toward me.
As if to embrace me, or as if waiting to be held.
As the figure approached, the feeling of sensory deprivation intensified. A heavy energy flowed from my head to my toes, and my heart slowed gradually as if being crushed in someone’s grip. The arm I used to aim my revolver froze to the point where I couldn’t move it even if I wanted to.
I knew I had to move, but my mind and body felt separated, remaining utterly motionless.
The black figure drew closer, now just a single step away from being able to pull me in.
A silent warning brushed coldly against the back of my neck.
Just then.
Someone pulled me into an embrace from behind, their hand gently covering mine as I gripped the revolver.
“Master.”
“Do-yoon.”
Just a single word.
A voice more affectionate and familiar than any other suppressed the noise-filled tone of the black figure.
“It’s okay.”
The cool hand covering the back of mine pulled the trigger for me.
Bang!
The gunshot tore through the darkness instantly.
The bullet pierced the head of the black figure with perfect precision.
Aaaaaaaagh!
A small, round hole opened where the bullet had passed, and centered around that spot, the ink-like silhouette twisted and scattered as if swallowing a scream.
Simultaneously, the helplessness weighing down my body vanished like a lie.
“Ugh, haaa…”
The breath I had been holding burst out of me.
As if I hadn’t been breathing at all for dozens of seconds, air rushed in and out of my throat so sharply it felt like my lungs might tear.
As soon as I lifted my head, I saw the arm firmly supporting my waist.
“Haa… thanks.”
Even as I spoke, my lips trembled.
I had barely managed to keep my sanity, but I wondered if that would have even been possible if he hadn’t been supporting me from behind.
That’s how dangerous the situation just was.
‘I can’t believe it would use that child.’
That damn Boss.
To remind me that my memories are fragmented in such a way.
As I ground my teeth in anger, the black figure before my eyes began to fluctuate.
The scattered fragments gathered in the air like a whirlwind.
The body I thought had been blown to pieces was reconnected in an instant, and the limp silhouette was molded back into a human form.
“Whyyyyy…”
The figure wailed in a torn voice.
The squirming black mass quickly reconstructed the human shape.
“Master… why… are… you…”
It wasn’t a voice, but rather the sensation of a murky liquid mimicking the shape of a voice.
The pronunciation stretched out like melting cheese.
No, more accurately, it was closer to “something” imitating human speech.
But could a mere imitation call me “Master”?
“You promised me…! Forever…!”
Someone other than that child—
“That you would… stay with me… forever…!”
Could it be possible… for someone else to know the promise between me and that child?
I was confused.
Could the child I can’t remember have been in that state from the very beginning?
Perhaps because my memories are fragmented, I am misinterpreting that child’s true form right now, or mistaking them for a monster.
Even as my mind grew increasingly hazy, the child’s voice continued to ring out.
Right then.
“Do-yoon, listen carefully.”
While I couldn’t take my eyes off the swaying form of the child, Lee Sunho called my name and forced me to turn around. As our eyes met, I felt my failing vision gradually brighten.
“You shouldn’t face that thing head-on.”
“Ah… right.”
“If it’s hard, look at me.”
Lee Sunho gave a soft smile.
“Look at me while you find the central axis. You can do it, right?”
As he continued to speak, my mind became clearer and clearer. To the point where the moment I had let my mind be clouded by such a bizarre hallucination felt foolish.
“…Don’t worry.”
I nodded and squeezed my eyes shut. A hot sensation spread around my eyes, and when I opened them again, blue energy was surging within them.
‘If I look at it directly, I’ll lose my mind.’
I gripped the revolver with both hands and took a deep breath. When I signaled Lee Sunho with a glance, he lunged forward instantly.
Slash!
Lee Sunho’s blade cut through the shimmering black figure.
Aaaaagh!
An ear-splitting scream erupted. However, the black figure quickly repaired the cut and continued to call out to me.
