Lee Sunho raised himself from the debris of the broken wood. Thanks to that, I could see his face and upper body even while I was lying on the bed.

As our eyes met, Lee Sunho gave a soft smile. It was a smile that looked kind at first glance, but a distinct, chilling energy was flowing from him that could not be ignored.

Perhaps displeased that Lee Sunho and I were making eye contact, the black boy partially blocked my view with his body.

“I thought all humans other than the hostages had been taken care of, but it seems there was one who’s still perfectly fine.”

I could feel the chill added to the boy’s flickering voice. His tone and the atmosphere around him were markedly different from how he treated me.

Lee Sunho brushed the dust off his clothes with composure, letting the boy’s words go in one ear and out the other.

“Get down. No one but me is allowed to climb on top of him as they please.”

Why are you the exception?

Lee Sunho’s boldness in mixing jokes even in this situation was surprising once again.

“Don’t give orders, you intruder.”

The boy snorted at Lee Sunho’s remark and stretched his hand out toward him.

“I don’t listen to anyone except for God’s words.”

Give me a break. You don’t listen to me either.

Both of them were talking absolute nonsense.

At that moment, countless stems of black shadow stretched out from the boy’s extended hand. Those stems, moving flexibly like living tentacles, had their tips suddenly transform into sharp points like awls.

In a fit of urgency, I struggled and looked toward Lee Sunho.

“Lee Sunho! Get out of the way!”

These shadows were both annoying and dangerous.

Even when I twisted my bound wrists and tried to scratch them with my fingernails, I only got the sensation of scratching empty air every time I touched them. True to being “shadows,” they were beings like smoke with no texture at all.

Nevertheless, their restraining power was certain, and even now, I remained tied to the bed, unable to budge.

Illusionary shadows with one-sided physical force. It was a freakish ability that could not be defended against despite being the same kind of physical force.

“You don’t have to worry.”

However, Lee Sunho did not lose his composure even as he watched the shadow tentacles swarming from all directions. It was as if he had already known the strategy to beat them from the moment they faced off.

Instead of avoiding the spot, Lee Sunho leaned forward and grabbed the hilt of the sword on his back.

In the next moment, a movement close to a quick-draw followed.

As the sword pulled from behind his back sliced through the air, even the sound followed a step late. It felt as though the trajectory of the sword only entered my vision after the sharp sound of tearing air passed by.

Immediately after, numerous black tentacles were cut away at twisted angles without a sound. Soon, the fragments of the shadows unraveled into a mess and scattered into the air, as if sand in the ocean had been stirred all at once.

‘I see.’

Lee Sunho’s ability was “Slashing,” boasting perfect cutting power. That power, which used to cut even high-grade barriers and illusions, was being exerted without exception even before shadows with indistinct forms.

Then, Lee Sunho’s sword sliced through the air once more. Unlike the smooth sword strike from before, a sharp wind pressure could be felt.

The target of the sword’s tip was, of course, the boy.

Seeming to think he couldn’t take Lee Sunho’s attack while mounted on top of me, the boy quickly rolled to the side and threw himself off the bed. My body momentarily stiffened at the remnants of the sharp sword strike that passed narrowly over me.

As soon as the boy backed off, Lee Sunho cut the shadows binding me. Before I could even rub my tingling wrists, Lee Sunho wrapped one arm around my back and helped me up.

“Thanks. How did you find out about this place?”

“Instinct?”

After saying something that sounded like Kwon Jeong-han, Lee Sunho began to thoroughly scan my appearance while keeping his sword pointed at the boy. His eyes narrowed as he stared particularly intently at my open shirt and white chest.

“I had a very uneasy feeling so I rushed over, and I’m so glad I did.”

What’s with that tone?

A cold sarcasm was mixed into his gentle way of speaking.

“If you wanted to do something that lewd so badly, you should have just told me. I’m confident I can do it well.”

“What kind of nonsense is that?”

“Well, it’s troublesome in many ways if my partner is frustrated. Mmm, right, I’ll make sure to do well in advance from now on so that things like this don’t happen.”

“Hey, I said…!”

Rumble!

I raised my voice in disgust at Lee Sunho’s untimely joke, but a roar much louder than my voice was heard.

The area around where the black boy stood was clearly pitted and broken. It seemed to be the work of the shadows spreading like a simmer at his feet.

Lee Sunho smirked with eyes that seemed to see right through whatever expression the boy, whose face was hidden by a veil, was making.

“Are you jealous?”

Lee Sunho’s gaze instantly turned arrogant.

“Over a mere imitation.”

“You…!”

The boy let out an angry voice completely different from before. The noise was so severe that I reflexively covered one ear with my hand.

The shadows stretched out at the boy’s feet fluctuated violently. The momentum was ominous, as if it would swallow both of us in an instant.

‘It’s dangerous.’

More than the shadows aiming for us, this situation itself was not very good.

‘There are hostages down below.’
