“Is that comforting?”
I couldn’t understand. Watching TV is comforting?
Lee Soon-bok nodded without hesitation.
“It’s, it’s just a small thing, so don’t be discouraged.”
“Really?”
“Yeah.”
At that moment, I realized that Baek Jae-heon might actually do something like that. Usually, he doesn’t watch TV much, and even when he does, he only watches the news. But that day, he had turned on an entertainment channel, so the laughter from the TV had filled the living room.
“How did you know?”
I never would have thought that watching TV could be Jae-heon’s way of comforting someone. The fact that Soon-bok knew this surprised me.
“Because Jae-heon likes it…”
“Huh?”
“N-no, I don’t mean like that! I mean, humanly…”
“Oh…”
“Misunderstanding prohibited…”
“Okay, I get it.”
Soon-bok was so insistent that I wasn’t misunderstanding that I had to reassure him. He even made an ‘X’ sign with his hands, which was adorable and funny. I showed him an ‘OK’ sign, and he let out a short sigh of relief before continuing.
“Jae-heon, even during his trainee days, there were times when I didn’t understand him…”
“Yeah.”
“But when you understand him, he’s pure and caring…”
Pure? For a moment, I thought of the nights when Jae-heon would press his lips to mine and hold me tightly, reluctant to let go. But there was no need to share that with Soon-bok, so I just nodded.
“Try to understand Jae-heon…”
Soon-bok added.
“I’m a crab, so…”
“Huh?”
“I prefer crabs…”
I wasn’t sure what that meant exactly, but I assumed it was his way of saying to try to understand Jae-heon.
As soon as we returned to the accommodation, the living room was in chaos.
“Why are your hands empty? Where’s the ice cream?”
“Did you two eat it all yourselves?”
Seeing Joo I-rip’s angry eyes and Kwon Ji-hak’s serious expression, I scratched my head and laughed, then quickly retreated to my room. My actions seemed to annoy them, as Joo I-rip shouted, “Keep your door open while you play!” I almost burst out laughing, but I ignored him and not only closed the door but also locked it.
The room was quiet. Baek Jae-heon was already in bed. The lights were off, and only a dim light cast a glow on the walls. His shoulders rose and fell slowly under the blanket. I hesitated for a moment, thinking he might be asleep, but then approached his bed.
“Did you come back?”
As I lay down next to him, Jae-heon spoke in a low voice, still half-asleep. His sleepy voice was endearing. He shifted his body slightly to make more room for me. Thanks to that, I lay comfortably next to him, looking up at the ceiling. Feeling his slow breathing beside me, I carefully spoke up.
“I’ve actually felt a bit hurt these past few days?”
“Huh…?”
His voice was heavy with sleep, so he must have been really tired today.
“I tried not to show it, but I felt hurt when I didn’t show it. It’s funny, isn’t it?”
“…”
“But it was only for a moment, and then I realized I was grateful.”
“…”
“You’ve waited for me for so long, so maybe this time it was my turn to wait for you.”
“…”
“Thank you for waiting for me again. It’s really…”
“…”
My words dissipated into the air. The silence continued without any response. I thought he might have fallen into a deep sleep. Even if he hadn’t heard me, I planned to tell him the same thing whenever I felt grateful.
I smiled softly and whispered,
“Goodnight.”
Just as I was about to get up and return to my own bed, my wrist was suddenly grabbed and pulled.
“Were you awake?”
Jae-heon’s sleepy face was close to mine. I wondered if he had woken up when I got out of bed, so I asked, but instead of answering, he whispered something else.
“Maybe we shouldn’t sleep tonight.”
