May Every Wound Be Fatal - Chapter 41.2
The moment Reyna reached the castle gate leading to the pier, she would be unable to evade the hundreds of arrows raining down. Even if she were lucky enough to survive, she would be confined in a cold tower only to be suddenly poisoned one day.
Elizer donned his armor for the first time in a long while and fastened an old sword to his waist. He froze abruptly just as he was about to mount his horse.
“Your Majesty?”
Elizer suddenly turned back and headed toward the gate leading to the now-disused pier beneath the steep fortress walls.
It was unclear what he was thinking. An inexplicable rage and a trembling fear boiled within him simultaneously.
He felt as though he could kill her himself right now.
No, he felt as though he could stop her death right now.
His mind was a mess. He felt he would only know what he intended to do once he saw her with his own eyes.
Thus, forgetting the plan, he pursued her.
“Reyna.”
Reyna’s face, as she turned to look at him, was stained with despair and terror. He saw her hiding a young knight of the Ducal house behind her back.
‘Ah.’
Elizer felt he could kill her and the man hiding behind her this very instant. Yet, in reality, it was difficult for him even to draw his sword from its sheath.
“Sir Lyman. Take custody of the Queen.”
Lyman seized Reyna, and his soldiers bound the young knight from the Ducal house. As the young knight was dragged away like a beast by the soldiers, Reyna struggled, her whole body shaking.
“Ventari! No!”
In her desperation to protect him, she seemed blind to everything else, even while her own life hung in the balance.
Elizer felt an indescribable fury. Ridiculously, it was followed by a sense of sorrow and betrayal.
He gripped Reyna’s tear-stained cheeks firmly, forcing her to look at him.
“I believe I told you that you cannot leave.”
“Your Majesty, Elizer. Please…”
Only then was he reflected in her eyes. There was no sense of satisfaction.
“You will not be able to leave your room for the time being.”
Reyna, who had been gasping for breath precariously, finally collapsed in his arms.
Elizer reflexively pulled her into a tight embrace. Pushing all other matters aside, he wanted to drag Reyna to his bedroom just like this and lock her away forever.
‘So that you can never leave me again, and thus…’
“Your Majesty. There is no more time. You must follow the plan, open the castle gates, and capture Diegor.”
Elizer barely regained his senses at the sound of Lyman’s voice calling to him.
He had work to do.
***
Leonard had searched the continent high and low to find a distant collateral relative of the Wills bloodline to set up as a new king, but he was ultimately betrayed by the families with whom he had formed blood alliances.
On a cool morning as dawn broke, a massacre that would be etched into history began in the innermost depths of the Crimson Citadel.
The gates opened all too easily, and it took less than half a day for the entirety of the Crimson Citadel, which had seemed eternal, to go up in flames.
The Duke, captured alive, was dragged to Elmaril.
What greeted him was the sight of his son, Diegor Dazbel, bound in chains and awaiting death.
And that was only the beginning.
Diegor was tortured in front of Leonard. Leonard was forced to watch helplessly as his son died bleeding.
Diegor was first flogged before the crowd and then beheaded. After witnessing it all with his own eyes, Leonard met his end in the exact same manner as his son.
The heads of the two men were hung atop the gates of Elmaril, and their bodies were quartered and displayed in other cities. Meanwhile, the Crimson Citadel continued to burn, and as if by divine will, no rain fell.
Just as Leonard had done until now, almost no one survived when everything was over.
Elizer climbed a high tower and stared at Leonard’s head hanging on the wall.
The Duke’s end was wretched. He had received exactly what he had dealt to others.
Exactly six years after Cassian’s death, Elizer had finally succeeded in his revenge. Yet, he did not feel the slightest bit of relief.
Below the tower, executions were still in full swing, and Reyna’s turn was approaching.
