May Every Wound Be Fatal - Chapter 44.2
‘No.’
Having let out a voiceless scream, he blinked slowly.
Everything seemed to flow in slow motion. And before his eyes, the moment he met Reyna on that night when stars poured down unfolded like a dream.
The silver-shimmering sky and the woman who shone so unexpectedly.
The sea breeze whispering various songs and her clear laughter.
The touching of finger to finger.
“Elizer.”
Her voice called him.
On the day he swore revenge against the Duke, Elizer had vowed never to lose anything again. Yet, it felt as though he had finally lost everything.
Just before losing consciousness completely, Elizer prayed fervently.
He wanted to go back to the moment he first met her.
***
Elizer wandered through a dream.
It was a dream where those he loved died one by one.
As always, Elizer could not stop those deaths.
The blood they shed soon formed a crimson pool, and Elizer, lying among them like a corpse, was gradually submerged in the blood.
Because it was a familiar nightmare, Elizer did not struggle to wake from the dream.
It was not a dream one could escape just by wanting to wake up. He knew his eyes would only open when he was completely submerged in the blood of his loved ones and could no longer breathe.
Thus, instead of struggling, Elizer helplessly closed his eyes and waited to suffocate.
It was then.
“Elizer.”
At the voice that drifted from nowhere, Elizer snapped his eyes open and turned his head.
Reyna was lying beside him. Her pale face, staring quietly at him, was half-submerged in the pool of blood just as he was.
…Why.
Feeling his heart sink, he reflexively reached out and grabbed her arm firmly.
“Why are you here?”
Reyna should not be in such a terrible place. At that moment, his only thought was that he had to take her and escape this place immediately.
However, immediately after, his body was swept away by a crimson wave.
He had clearly been lying upon a shallow pool of blood, but in an instant, his body floated as if he had fallen into the sea, and his toes could not reach the ground.
He could not tell what was happening. The problem was that he had lost his hold on her in the violently surging waves.
“Reyna.”
In the blink of an eye, the distance between him and Reyna grew.
Elizer flailed his arms, trying to grab her again. Reyna simply watched him with a face that betrayed no thoughts.
It felt as though he could catch her if she would only reach out her arm, but she seemed to have no intention of giving him her hand.
Elizer could not regain his senses due to the terror that he might lose her.
“Reyna!”
It was the moment he cried out her name once more in desperation.
Reyna whispered softly.
“I intend to die.”
It was a very small voice, yet those words pierced his ears exceptionally loudly, as if they would never be forgotten.
“Rey…”
The moment his face distorted with despair, a crimson wave swallowed Reyna completely.
No.
Waking up with a start as if struck by lightning, Elizer bolted upright.
“Ugh…”
A groan escaped him at the heavy pain felt in his neck. He looked around frantically while clutching his throat. It was because, for a moment, he could not distinguish between the dream and reality.
His dizzy vision gradually became clear, and the familiar scenery of the bedroom came into view. He saw several familiar palace attendants looking at him with startled faces.
Sir Lyman’s face was close by. He was saying something urgently. However, his voice did not register well in Elizer’s ears, as the terror of having lost Reyna had not yet faded.
‘A dream… was it a dream?’
Elizer felt relieved that the fact Reyna had been swallowed by crimson waves and vanished was a dream.
However, his heart could not help but drop immediately after.
“I intend to die.”
The thousands of lotus lanterns that lit up the night sky, the black sea where those golden lights flickered, and the pale face that receded rapidly.
Missing Reyna’s hand, and her vanishing before his eyes—that was not a dream.
