May Every Wound Be Fatal - Chapter 60.1
Elizer opened his eyes while furrowing his brows slightly. Dazzling light immediately overwhelmed his vision.
Due to the sudden light, he raised his head with a sharp scowl. The golden, flickering light of a glass lamp and a faint silhouette visible beyond that light flashed before his eyes.
At that sudden movement, Reyna , who had been carefully tilting the lamp over his face, widened her eyes.
“…Oh.”
She let out a low, calm exclamation and reflexively stepped back. The flame flickered precariously, clashing against the small glass.
The light carved a divide between the two, followed by a silence where only the sound of their fast-beating hearts could be heard.
Elizer, who had frozen in surprise, gradually grasped the situation.
The orange light covered half of her face and swallowed the other half. Her hand holding the lamp was trembling very slightly. She looked exactly like a child caught doing something bad.
“…Reyna.”
His voice was hoarsely cracked, causing him to pause for a moment.
“What were you doing?”
When he managed to finish his sentence, Reyna spoke hesitantly while clutching the glass lamp tightly with both hands.
“I just… I wanted to see your face properly.”
“…Ah.”
“I, I am sorry. I didn’t mean to disturb your sleep…”
Elizer immediately felt a sense of relief as the tension left his body. It was because he already knew the fact that Reyna was curious about the face of the husband who only visited at night.
He hadn’t known she was interested to this extent, though…
Elizer was afraid she might remember him. He belatedly lowered his head and awkwardly covered his face with one hand. Then, he slowly reached out and took the lamp from her hand.
“…Go to sleep now, Reyna. It is late.”
When her hand inevitably let go of the lamp, Elizer stood up with the lamp and placed it on the small side table next to the bed.
Reyna’s eyes, which followed his movements, wavered violently like shadows flickering in the light of a glass lamp.
“Are you perhaps hiding your face from me?”
The awkwardly standing Elizer paused and looked back at her. Reyna already had a sad look on her face.
“I wonder why you are doing that…”
Feeling a sense of crisis, he had no choice but to deny it for now.
“No, Reyna.”
Then, her glass-like green eyes, which were staring intently at him, sparkled with half-distrust and half-hope.
“Then…”
“…”
“Could you please not hide it and show me just a little more?”
The sad look had vanished before he knew it, and Reyna’s eyes were shining with pure expectation.
After a brief hesitation, Elizer had no choice but to return to her side, sitting back down on the floor as if nothing had happened and leaning his head against the edge of the bed.
He hesitantly lifted his gaze to check her mood, and Reyna was smiling slightly as if she were happy.
Elizer stared at that smile for a while, lost in a daze. Reyna stared intently at his face again during that interval, and Elizer, noticing the fact a step late, could not hold out for long this time either and quietly closed his eyes.
Reyna gave a tiny laugh, as if it were funny, so small it was barely audible.
“Haha…”
Despite that pleasant sound of laughter, Elizer stubbornly did not open his eyes. Then, he gradually made his breathing regular.
When it seemed Elizer had fallen back asleep, Reyna finally laid her body down quietly. Since it was quiet for a while, he thought she had fallen asleep like that.
“Elizer.”
At the low call, Elizer reflexively lifted his eyelids. In the dim surroundings, as their eyes met, Reyna asked as if it were a bit fascinating.
“Did I really call you by your name when we were alone?”
Startled by his name being called unexpectedly, Elizer unknowingly confessed honestly.
“…Sometimes.”
“I see.”
Then, Reyna seemed strangely excited. No, she repeated his name as if she were singing it, as if something about it pleased her greatly.
“Elizer.”
She tried saying it low, and she tried saying it high.
“Elizer.”
She tried saying it softly, and she tried saying it loudly.
Each time, an unknown sense of relief and a bit of anxiety filled his chest.
“Elizer…”
And at some point, her playful smile suddenly became ambiguous. Elizer blinked, feeling a sense of wonder.
Then, Reyna seemed to hesitate for a moment, then whispered in a voice that sounded embarrassed.
