May Every Wound Be Fatal - Chapter 71.2
“…Elizer.”
“……”
Elizer couldn’t tell whether she had remembered him or not.
With lips that barely seemed willing to move, he forced out the question.
“Why…”
His voice was heavy, crushed beneath emotion. Every word caught painfully in his throat.
“Why… are you crying?”
Reyna’s brows drew together a little more.
“Asking why I’m crying… what do you mean all of a sudden…? Ah.”
Only then did she seem to realize that tears were streaming down her face. She paused, startled, raised a hand, and touched her damp eyes.
“…I… I don’t know either. Why am I crying…?”
The terror that had frozen Elizer’s body slowly melted away, and a thin breath of relief escaped through his slightly parted lips.
“…Come here, Reyna.”
He wrapped an arm around her head and waist, drawing her close.
“It’s all right. Everything is all right.”
As if trying to hide the trembling of his own body, he tightened his embrace even more, repeating the words over and over, though he no longer knew whether he was saying them for her sake or his own.
Still bewildered that she had been crying at all, Reyna instinctively returned the embrace.
Lowering his head, Elizer gently pressed his lips to the tear-stained corners of her eyes.
Having calmed herself surprisingly quickly, Reyna soon stopped crying.
For a moment, it seemed as though peace had returned.
But the realization that it could shatter again at any time settled heavily over Elizer, leaving him unable to utter another word.
Nestled in his arms, Reyna simply blinked quietly. It seemed she was fully awake now.
She remained silent for a while, lost in thought, until she suddenly lifted her head.
Startled by the unexpected movement, Elizer unconsciously opened his eyes.
“Elizer.”
Reyna cupped both of his cheeks in her hands, making him meet her gaze.
Then, wearing a radiant smile, she whispered in amazement,
“It’s morning.”
Caught off guard by her sudden smile, Elizer could only stare blankly, blinking once… then twice, wondering what she meant.
With a small laugh, Reyna added,
“You’re still here. You haven’t gone back yet.”
“…Ah.”
Only then did Elizer realize how bright the room had become.
Before he even had time to react, her fingertips gently traced the shape of his eyes.
“So… this is what color your eyes are in the morning?”
She smiled softly.
“How beautiful…”
Feeling her gentle fingers caress the corners of his eyes, seeing the clear green eyes from which the tears had completely disappeared, Elizer completely forgot that he was supposed to flee before daylight.
Closing his eyes obediently, he unconsciously leaned his cheek into her small hand.
Her pleasant laughter rang softly beside his ear.
His heart trembled.
When he glanced up, she greeted him warmly, as though she were delighted to see him.
“Good morning, Elizer.”
He didn’t have to lose her.
Not yet.
“…Good morning.”
Relief washing over him, Elizer lowered his head and gently kissed her forehead.
To everyone’s surprise, Elizer did not leave until nearly noon.
If she were being honest, Reyna wanted to selfishly keep him by her side all day.
But she barely managed to remind herself that he had duties to attend to.
After he finally left, she found herself alone on the bed.
Only then did an unfamiliar soreness spread through her muscles.
At the same time, the drowsiness she had been holding at bay came crashing over her all at once. Sinking into the soft blankets, Reyna stretched her pleasantly weary body.
The moment she closed her eyes, memories of the previous night resurfaced.
A shy smile escaped her as her cheeks flushed crimson.
After all…
Last night, they had become one not just once, but several times.
By the end, I was so exhausted that I fell asleep without even realizing it. And when I opened my eyes again…
As she retraced her memories one by one, Reyna suddenly stopped and opened her eyes.
“…Come to think of it… why was I crying?”
She had been so delighted to discover that Elizer was still there that she had completely forgotten she’d awakened in tears.
Belatedly, she tried to remember.
She was certain she had dreamed something.
But no matter how hard she searched, she couldn’t remember a single detail.
Only the lingering feeling remained—that she had been unbearably sad, overcome with grief.
“What on earth was that…?”
Countless questions surfaced in her mind, but before she could pursue them, a tidal wave of sleepiness washed over her, and her thoughts faded away.
