In the room where only the sound of scraping filled the air, Eli tilted his head toward Sierra. His expression suggested he wanted to see what and how much she had drawn.

“Don’t move.”

Sierra commanded firmly. The man, more accustomed to giving orders, narrowed his eyes at that.

“So while you’re having fun, I’m supposed to just sit here idly.”

He grumbled, yet straightened up for her. Sierra looked at Eli’s lips, where a trace of a smile still lingered. She traced the finely curved corners of his mouth with her fingertips.

Beautiful and cruel.

Ever since she learned that some things leave and never return, Sierra often found herself thinking like this when faced with something beautiful.

A spring in full bloom—the season had been cruel when she returned alone, while the one she had watched it with was gone.

Sierra touched Eli’s lips, like someone wanting to memorize the texture before going blind. Her fingertips trembled faintly, as if handling a fragile piece of glass.

She wanted to draw him. She wanted to capture this moment—him watching her. She wanted to immortalize somewhere the fleeting instant when this man, who might leave at any moment, was by her side.

All her desires converged on a single wish.

She wished he wouldn’t leave.

“I wish you were a bad person. But you’re a beautiful one. That’s what makes you bad.”

Eli listened quietly to Sierra’s words, then met her gaze.

“What’s with all this ‘beautiful, beautiful’ nonsense?”

As he spoke, his lips brushed against her fingers as they moved, tickling her. Eli gently bit Sierra’s finger that rested on his lips. His soft tongue playfully sucked on it. Sierra flinched.

Another strange act.

“Stop… Stay still.”

The moment she muttered, he released her finger. Her moistened finger slipped away from his lips.

“I can’t stay still. Whenever you look at me like that, it makes me want to act up.”

Did he smile? Sierra didn’t see—because Eli lowered his head and pressed his lips to hers.

The light touch and pull away left a sense of longing. After leaving only a playful bird-like kiss, Eli spoke in a low voice.

“That’s my trick.”

What a wicked trick. Sierra pressed her lips together. Under his quiet gaze, heat rose to the tips of her ears. Before he could laugh at her reddened ears, Sierra grabbed them and covered them.

With her head bowed deeply, Sierra finished her drawing. Whenever she glanced up at her model, she met Eli’s watching eyes. She couldn’t hold his gaze for long and would lower her head again.

Just as the man captured in her drawing neared completion, a voice came.

“What should we do once you finish the drawing?”

A voice, asking what she wanted to do, sounded softly in her ear. Sierra felt a pang of regret that she could never capture that voice anywhere on paper.

“Shall we go buy some clothes?”

A hand, now gloved again, reached toward Sierra, who lifted her face from where it had been pressed close to the sketchbook.

Eli touched the collar of Sierra’s blouse with his fingertips.

“Your clothes are thin.”

The thin fabric rustled.

Sierra nodded, wanting to extend the time he would stay by her side by any means. The clothes themselves didn’t matter.

She wished the clothing store would be far from the hotel. She even imagined the car breaking down on the way there.

Her gaze unconsciously drifted toward Eli’s long, straight legs. Beneath the hem of his suit pants, his ankles were faintly visible.

Even the wicked advice to break his ankles came to mind, and she lowered her head again. She didn’t know how she would break the ankles of a man larger than herself, nor could she actually do such a bad thing.

She only drew and redrew the picture to no avail. No matter how much she drew, she felt she couldn’t capture the real thing.

The layers upon layers of the man’s hair left black smudges on the edge of her hand.

The satisfaction of seeing the man captured in her drawing, the frustration that the man in the picture could never match the real one, and even the fantasy of breaking his ankles—all of it remained like black smudges.
