Frey stared blankly at the ceiling.

It was neither the opulent bedroom at the ducal mansion nor the shabby room where Isaac had confined him.

“Where……?”

Where was this……?

He didn’t know, but it seemed he hadn’t returned to the ducal mansion yet.

Frey stared at the ceiling and sighed in relief, only to let out a disbelieving laugh at his own absurdity.

He had run away to avoid the death he met in the original story, only to nearly die before the novel properly began.

‘The idea that I couldn’t die before the original story began just because I was supposed to die later was nonsense.’

He had known it was absurd even when he used it to give himself courage.

‘Frey’ was not the protagonist, and since he was destined to die anyway, his existence couldn’t have much effect on the story.

“Haa…….”

Frey exhaled at length and slowly closed his eyes.

He knew it was a bleak novel, but its difficulty was on a different level from the other transmigration stories he had read.

Some people tried to eat him. Others tried to kill him without warning.

‘This transmigration might be a disaster…….’

No, perhaps the mistake was transmigrating into a character who died in the original story.

‘Still, I’m glad to be alive.’

He had worried that he had made the wrong choice, but Samuel had come and saved his life.

There was still so much that seemed hopeless, and Frey would have to make new plans for the future, but he was alright.

He was alive.

As he finished sorting through his thoughts, a disbelieving laugh sounded to his left. Frey opened one eye and turned his head slightly to find Samuel standing there with his arms crossed and Leo beside him looking restless.

“You seem well now, considering that smile.”

“Ah, Your Grace…….”

Frey started to speak, then frowned at the scratchiness in his throat. Leo hurried over with a cup of water.

“You suffered from a high fever for two full days. Here, drink some water first.”

“……Mm, thank you.”

When Frey reached out to take the cup, Leo shook his head and pulled it back slightly.

Frey looked at him in confusion as Leo glanced at his bandaged hand, then made a sorrowful face.

“I’ll help you drink……. They said all the bones in the back of your hand are broken. They gave you emergency treatment, but no healing mage came with us, so the bones haven’t been mended yet.”

“Ah…….”

“D-don’t worry. Once we return to the capital, the healing mages will make the bones knit back together perfectly……! You may be uncomfortable for a few days, though…….”

Leo glanced at Samuel as he spoke, growing more dejected.

Leo knew why Frey had fled the ducal mansion. That was probably why he kept watching Samuel now that the Duke intended to take Frey back to the capital.

“Sir Herbert, if you intend to keep chattering, perhaps you should move aside.”

As Leo looked guilty, Samuel spoke in an unusually sharp voice.

“I-I’m sorry!”

Startled, Leo hurriedly brought the cup to Frey’s lips. Frey drank, cleared his throat several times, and slowly spoke.

“Leo.”

“Y-yes?”

“It seems you have something to say to me.”

The instant Frey finished, Leo slid off the edge of the bed and knelt on the floor. He bowed his head and apologized.

“I’m sorry.”

“What?”

“My personal affairs placed you in danger, Young Lord. That is…… an offense worthy of death.”

“No, that’s not what…….”

“I will accept any punishment. If you order me to resign my knighthood, I will. But please spare my life……. I still have parents to support…….”
