Something’s Not Right About This Transmigration - Chapter 3.1
‘The last time I lost my memory’?
Frey’s eyes widened at the wholly unexpected remark. The man let out a long sigh, as though this was precisely what he had anticipated.
“I knew something was off. You were unconscious for three months. There was no chance you’d wake without any symptoms.”
“……Have I lost my memory before?”
At the question, the man rubbed a weary hand down his face and nodded. Then he carefully took Frey’s arm, led him to a chair, and retrieved an ointment from the shelf before approaching him again.
“Do you remember your name?”
“……Frey?”
“Then what’s my name?”
When Frey shook his head, the man let out another long sigh. He composed his dark expression and applied the ointment to Frey’s badly swollen cheek.
“Regulus Atiaos Kasbol. You, the Duke you’re set to marry, and I were childhood friends. ……I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve introduced myself to you.”
“……Kasbol?”
That was the name of the country where the protagonists of the novel lived. Then perhaps…….
“An Imperial Prince……?”
“The Imperial Crown Prince. Judging by that look when you heard the name, you at least seem to remember which country you belong to. And there doesn’t appear to be anything wrong with your head apart from your memory.”
Regulus gave a faint laugh and tapped Frey’s nose with his finger. There was not the slightest awkwardness in the gesture.
As though he did it often.
“We were…… childhood friends?”
“Yes. You and the Duke were both my childhood companions. That’s how the three of us met……. It’s also how I know you sometimes lose your memories altogether when you collapse after using your ability. It’s been a long time since you’ve forgotten everything this completely, though, so even I’m a little flustered.”
Regulus folded his arms and gazed at Frey, as if telling him to ask if he wanted to know anything else.
Frey had already been in trouble because he knew almost nothing about ‘Frey’. Besides, ‘Samuel’ and ‘Frey,’ who appeared as spouses in the original work, weren’t married yet.
Regulus, who knew Frey before the original story began, was like a lifeline sent down from heaven.
“Your Highness.”
Frey swallowed and discreetly reached out to grasp the edge of Regulus’s clothes.
“Would you please help me……?”
Frey let his brows droop into a pitiful expression.
“You want my help?”
“Yes…….”
“Haha. I never thought I’d hear those words from someone who always insisted he would handle everything himself.”
Regulus looked down at Frey without hiding the corners of his lips as they crept upward. Then he gave a light nod of agreement.
“Alright. What would you like me to help with?”
The instant he received permission, Frey spoke without hesitation.
“The truth is, I don’t really understand my current situation. All I know is that I’m going to marry Duke Norbert and…….”
Frey touched the cheek covered in ointment with his fingertips, as though unable to bring himself to say aloud that his own parent appeared to be beating him.
“Yes, it must be confusing when you can’t remember.”
“…….”
“But since we don’t see each other every day, I don’t know exactly what you’ve been going through either. There are still a few things I know for certain. Would you like to hear them?”
Frey nodded vigorously at Regulus’s question. Regulus’s silver eyes curved gently at his reaction. Frey had the strange feeling that there was affection in that gaze.
“Where should I begin? Perhaps with the fact that you and I were lovers?”
“……Please don’t lie to me.”
“You didn’t fall for it.”
……As if he would.
* * *
Frey stared at the closing door in silence.
Regulus had talked with him for some time, then left the room with a promise to visit again tomorrow when Frey let out a tired yawn.
“Whew.”
Frey flung himself onto the bed and recalled Regulus’s words.
“The wedding was originally set for three months ago. You collapsed two days before the ceremony.”
Then he had woken one week ago.
And the person he was to marry was indeed Duke Samuel Norbert, just as Frey had known.
“Wait.”
Samuel was coming tomorrow to set a new wedding date. That meant, at the very least, ‘Samuel’ had not refused the marriage.
“He wanted to marry Frey, and still treated him that way?”
The Samuel from the novel had not loved ‘Frey’.
They had been married for a year.
Even though they were still newlyweds, once Samuel grew close to the main bottom, Leo, he never returned to his mansion again.
