That Face Is the Problem - Chapter 46.2
That was why, whenever he rejected a confession, he was usually either angry or bewildered. He had never once felt sorry.
Crying women, angry women, men who suddenly claimed it was a joke, men who hit Da-sol in a fit of rage… reactions varied widely, so there was never any reason to feel sorry.
Of course, Jae-gyeong had cried too, but…
‘Damn it, whatever.’
Da-sol muttered quietly to himself as he placed the empty lunch container and disposable spoon into a plastic bag. It was exactly the moment Jae-gyeong put the last spoonful of rice into his mouth.
Jae-gyeong carefully tidied up the lunch container and put it in the bag as well. He finished chewing the remaining food and opened the top of the large plastic bag wider to make it easier for the other team members to throw away the trash.
Da-sol silently watched Jae-gyeong. His body exuded thoughtfulness. Perhaps the reason he could like Da-sol while keeping clear boundaries was because of that attitude.
‘Yeah, so that’s why I… said I’d make an effort at first. And I’m still doing this crazy effort now.’
Da-sol hated humans as a species, despised men, and found human groups altogether dreadful.
Yet for individual humans, like Hyeon Hee-ro, Jeong Jeong-eon, Suhyeok, Yoo Ri-na, and Kim Yejin, he was slightly more lenient. Even within a trashy group, if you looked closely, there were people who were less bad or less shameless.
Still, his guard against humans in general had not lowered. With strangers, especially men, he was harsh and prickly. Jae-gyeong and Lee Hyeon were gentle enough, which was fortunate. Otherwise, it would have been normal to behave like that extremely ugly Tamer from Team 2 or someone who looked like Park Gam-ja.
Hyeon Hee-ro and Jeong Jeong-eon had repeatedly advised him, “We must protect people, so try to move past such thoughts,” but Da-sol had not listened. It was annoying, what else could he do. Although he liked Hyeon Hee-ro and Jeong Jeong-eon, their love for humanity did not resonate with him.
He was still observing Jae-gyeong, who was now sitting upright on the sofa, rolling his dim eyes around. Like a fool.
But this fool would probably never tell Da-sol to feel love for humanity or to try loving everyone. Jae-gyeong was not that kind of person. In some ways, he might even be a little similar to Da-sol. There was no real basis for it; it just seemed so.
Then Da-sol noticed why Jae-gyeong’s eyes seemed dull. They were black with a hint of gray.
Hunters with strong mana sometimes had changes in hair or eye color after awakening. Just as Da-sol had pink eyes, Hyeon Hee-ro had vivid blue eyes, and Jeong Jeong-eon had deep violet eyes.
So this person’s eyes were gray. That was why they looked so blurry and vacant… eyes that sometimes seemed to hold tears even when not crying. Eyes that reminded one of a helpless, gentle animal being led somewhere.
At that moment, Jae-gyeong’s eyes turned toward Da-sol. Da-sol tried to look away but missed the timing. No, it was better to say he was completely captivated by Jae-gyeong’s gray-tinged black eyes.
“Why…?”
Jae-gyeong whispered, a trace of anxiety and fear in his gaze.
Da-sol realized for the first time that gray could be this transparent and clear. He said nothing and continued staring into Jae-gyeong’s eyes, like an entomologist observing a butterfly specimen.
“Did… did I do something wrong…?”
Worry in Jae-gyeong’s eyes deepened. Da-sol, as if in a trance, reached toward Jae-gyeong’s eyes. Jae-gyeong’s eyelashes twitched.
Soon, a pink light flickered at Da-sol’s fingertips. He had cast a heal on Jae-gyeong. Until then, the other team members who had not been paying attention now simultaneously noticed.
Jae-gyeong was startled and touched his eyes.
“Did my eyes get hurt…?”
The other team members also asked in surprise. But Da-sol had not healed because Jae-gyeong was injured.
He simply thought that maybe casting a heal would ease some of the worry, anxiety, or fear in those eyes. Of course, it did not actually happen.
“No, you saw it wrong.”
Da-sol lowered his hand and answered quietly.
