He must have truly met a fairy. A being like a spirit of this mountain. How else could someone so small be supernaturally beautiful and glowing?

Jae-gyeong was completely spellbound as he looked down at the girl’s profile. At that moment, she looked up at Jae-gyeong. Their eyes met.

“If you walk straight from here, the entrance to the mountain will appear again.”

“H-here? But there’s not even a single light here?”

“What do you mean there isn’t? It’s so bright.”

The fairy spoke as if she were seeing a world different from Jae-gyeong’s. It was true that her surroundings were glowing white. Very faintly, though.

“C-could you please go with me? I’m so scared… I feel like I’m going to cry….”

Jae-gyeong gathered his courage and grabbed the hem of the girl’s T-shirt. The girl slapped Jae-gyeong’s hand away sharply and said as if annoyed.

“You’re already crying. What do you mean you feel like you’re going to cry?”

“Sob….”

“Ha… fine. Then just follow me from behind. And don’t you dare touch me.”

The instruction to never touch her sounded extremely meaningful.

‘Does this being disappear if hands touch her…?’ The middle-school-aged Jae-gyeong, who had a vivid imagination and was quite a coward, thoroughly withdrew his hands just as the girl told him to. And to ensure he wouldn’t touch her even by mistake, he clasped his hands behind his back.

“Are you someone who lives here…?”

Jae-gyeong asked cautiously while following the girl. A wandering spirit… no, a land-bound fairy… was it something like that? But the girl answered bluntly.

“No, I’ll be going back in a few days.”

“To where…?”

“That’s none of your business.”

“Oh… yeah… sorry….”

“Why are you saying sorry again?”

“Because it seems like you dislike me….”

The girl glared sharply at Jae-gyeong. Jae-gyeong, who had been following at a slight distance, stopped quickly, afraid of bumping into her. In the darkness, the girl’s face, shining even whiter, was beautiful enough to make one gasp.

“Are you crying?”

The girl asked, clicking her tongue. Then she walked over with heavy steps and spoke.

“I’ve really never seen someone as bothersome as you.”

She took a handkerchief out of her pants pocket, stretched out her arm, and roughly wiped the corners of Jae-gyeong’s eyes.

“But I don’t dislike you that much. So don’t cry.”

The girl put the tear-soaked handkerchief back into her pocket, scrunched up her face, turned her body back to the front, and started walking again. Her speed was too fast to be considered a human’s pace, so Jae-gyeong had to hurry to keep up.

“I really hate touching boys. So don’t bother me. Got it?”

“Yeah… sorry…. But I didn’t mean to cry…. The tears just come out on their own….”

That was the end of the conversation. Not long after, they arrived at the foot of the mountain, the place where Jae-gyeong had started the courage test.

“You can go that way.”

The girl said. Jae-gyeong turned his head toward the bright area where his schoolmates and teachers were gathered. It seemed they didn’t even know Jae-gyeong had gotten lost. Most of the students were excited, chattering about how it was surprisingly scary or how he wasn’t scared at all.

“Um….”

It was when Jae-gyeong looked to the side to offer his thanks.

“Huh…?”

The girl had vanished. He looked around, but he couldn’t see where she had gone. Because of this, Jae-gyeong came to believe even more firmly that she was a fairy.

Once one falls for a non-human existence, it is the way of things to never be able to forget that existence forever. Thus, Jae-gyeong kept only that girl in his heart until he met Da-in, believing her to be his very first love.

“You see? It wasn’t anything like a ghost…. She really was a fairy…. I’m telling you, I met a fairy….”

Jae-gyeong finished his explanation and checked Da-sol’s reaction. He wanted to see if emphasizing that his first love wasn’t human might make his past romantic story seem a bit more acceptable.

However, Da-sol’s expression was strange.

“Wh-why…?”

“No, it’s just that I think I have a similar experience. It suddenly crossed my mind. This is fascinating.”

Da-sol furrowed his brows as if searching through long-forgotten memories. Then he made a sound like “Huh?” and looked at Jae-gyeong. It was a gaze as if he were looking at someone he had never met in his life, making Jae-gyeong feel suddenly afraid.

“Wh-why are you doing this, Mr. Da-sol….”

“I also once led a lost boy out of the mountains when I was in middle school…. What is this?”

Da-sol tilted his head. Jae-gyeong opened his eyes wide.

“Pardon…?”

“I know it’s a really nonsensical assumption, but… looking at you now, it kind of looks like that crybaby back then…. Don’t tell me, that kid back then was Jeong Mr. Jae-gyeong?”

Da-sol stared fixedly at Jae-gyeong’s face and asked. His tone was as if he himself couldn’t believe it.
