“I can see the castle over there.”

A black castle towered high on a low hill. The building had an ominous feel just by looking at it, and the boss of the Gate was surely residing there.

“I will take the lead.”

The interior of the citadel had an atmosphere on a completely different level from the outside. A thick, heavy demonic energy swirled in the air, weighing down the body. An ordinary person would have gone mad, but Ian and Vermouth were exceptions. As they walked down the hallway covered in a red carpet and reached the hall, they saw a vampire sitting in an arrogant posture on the throne at the far end.

“Ho, uninvited guests who came on their own feet.”

The pale-skinned vampire shook the red blood in a wine glass and smiled fishily.

“I shall praise your skill for clearing out those bug-like zombies and coming here. However, this is not a place for inferior humans like you—”

The vampire tried to continue speaking leisurely, but Ian cut him off in the middle.

“You talk too much. A Baron?”

“No. He seems to be a Viscount.”

Vermouth replied as such and raised the sword he had been holding low. Seeing the sword imbued with pure white aura, the vampire’s expression distorted hideously.

“Haha, impudent humans!”

The aura shot like a lightning bolt aiming for the vampire’s neck, but the Viscount avoided the attack by transforming his body into a swarm of bats. Those bats then scattered into a blood mist before landing behind Ian’s back.

“An impatient knight. But my interest is not in you.”

The vampire’s blue eyes flashed greedily toward Ian.

“You are the prey that the Great Ones spoke of. The one who carries the thick, disgusting scent of light.”

“…The Great Ones?”

Ian furrowed his brow unconsciously. At that, the vampire licked his lips with his tongue and cackled flippantly. Most vampires had perished in the war at Lancia. Therefore, the one who had risen to the position of Viscount now was still a young individual. He had heard of the terrors of holy power, but he did not fear it.

“Yes. Not long ago, Great Ones clad in the demonic energy of the abyss visited this citadel. They described your characteristics to us and gave an order. To the one who snaps the neck of the human emitting light, they promised the blessing of eternal darkness!”

Ian’s expression froze coldly. It was because the goal of the demons had become clear. Not only were those bastards infiltrating the human world by opening Gates, but they were also planning to kill the two who could use holy power.

“To kill you, even at this very moment, shadows wearing human skins will be plotting across the world to choke the life out of you! You people will never survive—”

“How dare you.”

Boom!

It was before the Vampire Viscount could even finish his sentence.

Along with a horrific sound of rupture that shook the entire dungeon, the holy power explosively emitted from Vermouth’s entire body swallowed the hall like a massive storm.

“How dare you, bug-like beasts, refer to the Saint as prey?”

The edges of Vermouth’s purple pupils were stained with gold. The face of the usually relaxed and arrogant knight vanished without a trace, and the ruthless nature of the ‘beast’ that used to tear demons apart with bare hands in Lancia fully awakened.

“W-what on earth is this light!”

“Targeting the Saint? Choking his life? I shall start by pulling out that tongue of yours.”

Vermouth’s hand tore off the vampire’s entire right arm. The Viscount screamed and tried to escape by turning into bats, but the pure white aura extending from Vermouth’s hand snared the vampire’s entire body like a net and slammed him into the floor. Only then did the terror he had only heard about become a reality.

“Save me, keu-heuk!”

“Save you? There is no mercy for a bug who conspired to kill the Saint.”

Vermouth threw his sword aside and began to tear the vampire’s torso and limbs apart with only his two hands like a beast. Resistance was meaningless. A horrific death rattle burst from the dying vampire’s mouth, and the dark red blood that splattered in all directions soaked Vermouth’s pale face and clothes.

“…….”

Ian watched that scene of overwhelming and cruel slaughter quietly.

‘No, I’ve seen too much to be surprised here.’

He had even seen an Inquisitor torture someone who sympathized with demons. This much was bearable. Until the Vampire Viscount turned into ashes and completely vanished, Vermouth trampled and burned him without mercy. Thus, the boss of the dungeon disappeared without a trace.

Only then did Vermouth withdraw his dripping hands and look back. The sight of the knight covered in vampire blood on his face and neck was disastrous yet strangely captivating.

“…Vermouth.”

“Do not worry, Lord Ian.”

Gasping for breath, Vermouth walked over and knelt before Ian. In his purple eyes, instead of the madness from a moment ago, a pathetically blind loyalty and affection were pooled.
