Dean Kelly pressed his heavy eyelids tightly, eyes closed.

It was late, and he had finally finished interviews with the staff. Now he had to organize everything and draft a report to present to the Crown Prince.

As he went through each suspicious circumstance one by one, a dull ache throbbed at his temples.

He had to have everything prepared while the Crown Prince was away. He already knew that Kailos, despite his outward actions, was meticulous and sensitive. He had already suspected nothing within the Academy itself.

Fortunately, he had found some meaningful points to review when the Crown Prince returned. That was when it happened.

At the sound of the door opening, Dean Kelly spoke without turning his head.

“I’m tired. We’ll talk tomorrow.”

As always, he thought it was his secretary entering. But there was no reply.

Not even a single footstep.

Dean Kelly stiffened and slowly lifted his head.

“You are….”

The one who entered was none other than the librarian, the person he had been most suspicious of.

Following him, figures with their faces deeply hidden by coats filed in.

Dean Kelly’s expression froze coldly.

“Entering without permission…”

“You never needed to ask for my permission in the first place.”

The librarian’s voice had grown lower, and his tone had shifted.

“The seat you occupy was originally mine.”

His gaze landed on the chair Dean Kelly had been sitting in.

For a moment, Dean Kelly recalled a former candidate for Dean. But that person was not the librarian. It was clearly someone else.

The situation contradicted the information he knew. A foreboding sense crept in.

“Now it’s time to take it back.”

The librarian leaned leisurely against the sofa.

The three who had come with him stepped forward and began to surround Dean Kelly as if to intimidate him.

“Do you dare touch me? Back off before I call for help.”

Dean Kelly shouted, but anxiety betrayed his voice.

“If you can, then try it.”

The librarian replied with a mocking tone, and a cold sweat ran down Dean Kelly’s spine.

The shadows of the three stretched long and pressed down on the room.

Dean Kelly sprang from his seat and stepped back. A sudden wave of unease washed over him.

Though human in form, there was something alien about their presence.

“Who… are you?”

A trembling breath escaped as he asked.

“The girl who will soon die is so curious,” one of the coat-clad figures sneered.

He then lifted the edge of his coat.

A familiar face.

Dean Kelly’s eyes went wide, mouth agape.

Before his shock could fully register, another reached out like lightning. His face was roughly grabbed, and cold arms wrapped around him from behind.

He struggled, but the assailant subdued him effortlessly.

“Have you heard of the Shadow Sect?”

Brian spoke in a deceptively kind voice.

“They are the ones who wield the forbidden power.”

Dean Kelly seemed to realize something and struggled again.

“Al…chemy.”

At the word she barely managed to utter, Brian nodded with a smile.

“Exactly. And we will offer you as a sacrifice to ascend to the light. Everything is already prepared.”

At that moment, another took a brown bottle from their cloak.

As the cap opened, the air in the room warped.

At first, it seemed a tiny insect was crawling out of the bottle. But the moment it touched the floor, it swelled like a living shadow.

It grew to the length of a finger, revealing its form clearly.

Its head resembled an insect, its body covered in cold, shining scales.

Between these were patches of tissue resembling mammalian flesh.

The grotesquely stitched creature crawled out, dripping liquid.

“Just finished the experiment.”

Dean Kelly’s breath caught.

The chilling waves emitted by the creature filled the room.

“Let’s see if you can survive this.”

Brian muttered in a low voice.

“If you’re lucky, you might keep your life…”

His eyes gleamed ominously.

“I wonder if that will be good news for you.”

The words fell like a verdict.

Dean Kelly, foam at her mouth, fainted. Her eyes rolled back, body convulsing in small spasms before her limbs went limp.

Brian bent down to check her. After confirming under her eyes and at her neck, he stood and turned to the leader of the group.

“She’s still alive.”

“You’re lucky.”

The leader’s face twisted into a smile.

“Truly easy.”
