The smooth blade of the sword did not have a speck of dirt on it. Yet, it was unmistakably that sword which had shattered the blocked exit in an instant.

Kailos lightly shook the spotless blade, as though scattering an invisible tension.

“So, the intruder has appeared.”

Brian muttered in a voice strained with forced restraint. His eyes clearly showed irritation.

His only target today had been the Empress. Afterward, he had planned to use her as a pretext to capture Prince Cassian again. But because of an unexpected figure, all of his calculations were ruined.

‘This is why I had chosen to exclude the Crown Prince.’

Brian recalled what the soothsayer from the Shadow Corps had once said. The Crown Prince was a destiny obscured by shadows, an unknown we must be wary of.

Whatever the Shadow Corps intended, Kailos touched the ground with the tip of his sword and slowly turned his head. Starting with Brian, his sharp gaze swept over the hooded figures one by one. It was sharper than any blade.

“The parasites that have been feeding on the Empire have finally revealed themselves.”

As the cold, resolute voice rang out, Brian’s shoulders visibly twitched. It felt as though every sin he had committed while living in hiding had been laid bare. He soon ground his teeth together.

“Insolent bastard.”

“You dare speak to the Crown Prince so freely. Do you admit, then, that you are guilty of a crime deserving death?”

Kailos’s lips curved upward. His confident expression exuded composure and certainty.

The Empress glanced sidelong at the Crown Prince holding the sword and pressed her lips together. His tone, always unbearably arrogant, now brought her an undeniable sense of satisfaction as it was directed toward her own tormentor.

“Do you really think you will always remain the Crown Prince?”

Brian bared his hostility openly.

Kailos let out a short laugh and shook his head.

“I have no intention of remaining only the Crown Prince. I will become the Emperor.”

Before his words had even ended, Kailos’s eyes gleamed. The hand holding the sword drew a sharp curve. The sweeping slash stirred the air, kicking up dust that whirled with the wind and obscured the sorcerers’ vision.

Brian stepped back. He had expected Kailos to use the dust as a weapon, but in that instant, a murderous presence flared from another direction.

A shadow that had been unseen suddenly leapt out and charged straight at him. Brian twisted his body in haste and barely avoided it.

“Aaagh!”

A ripping scream echoed through the passage.

When Brian whipped his head around, he saw a sorcerer thrashing in midair with a spirit beast biting into his throat. A sickening crack sounded, and the sorcerer’s body went limp. When the beast released its jaws, the sorcerer’s eyes had gone lifeless, and his body fell to the floor.

The stench of blood filled the air. Brian’s breathing grew rough.

While his attention had been caught by the corpse, the spirit beast vanished. Hidden by darkness, it was nowhere to be seen. He could not tell when or where it would strike next.

Behind him, Kailos’s eyes gleamed coldly.

He raised his sword high and swung it down.

Shiiik!

Brian instinctively twisted his body, but a sharp metallic sound followed by a searing pain tore from his shoulder down across his chest.

“Ugh, aagh!”

Blood gushed out, staining his clothes red in an instant.

Staggering backward, Brian clutched his chest where the blade had grazed. Blood seeped rapidly through his fingers.

Rage and fear trembled within him as he lifted his head to glare at Kailos.

Yet Kailos did not press the attack. Instead, he watched him calmly, speaking in an even tone.

“I’ve heard that you and your people wield sorcery. Each of you has your own specialty.”

Brian’s gaze instinctively shifted to the Empress. His eyes burned with resentment and fury.

It must have been the information she leaked that allowed Kailos to uncover their weaknesses. He should have killed her sooner. Everything had gone wrong.

As if reading his thoughts, Kailos flicked the blood from his blade and let out a faint, chilling laugh.

“And you, in particular, are said to create something special, aren’t you? Such a peculiar talent. Even without that, you could have lived your entire life without wanting for anything.”

He slowly turned his sword, the tip glinting faintly.

“So why choose to do something like that?”

Brian’s face contorted. He clenched his teeth to stifle his ragged breathing and snarled,

“A mere ordinary human like you could never understand the depth of my purpose.”

Kailos’s gaze sharpened even further.

“That is why you commit acts no human ever should.”

Brian gritted his teeth harder, clutching his bleeding chest as blood surged forth once more.
