“Robin, I told you to explain, not to make him faint.”

“You saw it yourself, did you not? I didn’t so much as lift a finger.”

Robin raised both hands, insisting on his innocence.

Though Robin protested, Kailos’s attention was already fixed on the man collapsed on the floor.

“Indeed. And yet, when a man collapsed, you didn’t so much as try to catch him.”

“I save those reflexes to protect His Highness the Crown Prince. Thanks to that, I too am a victim now, since what was to be delivered still remains undelivered.”

“If he cannot even speak, at least find out why he fainted.”

Kailos cut off the pointless chatter and issued his order. The man had always looked frail, but for him to actually lose consciousness like this—

Kailos had been looking forward to seeing how Leslun would react, so the situation was a disappointment.

“Perhaps I shouldn’t have kept him alive.”

His earlier thought, that it was good he’d spared him, flipped over in an instant.

“I’ll look into it.”

Robin left with quick steps, and Kailos turned his gaze back to where Leslun still lay unconscious. His skin, pale to begin with, was now bloodless, as thin and colorless as paper. Kailos wondered if he might actually die like this.

He assumed it must be from the wound on his feet, but still, the sheer weakness of the man’s body made him click his tongue. Just then, Robin returned, followed by attendants and a physician.

The two attendants began to lift and support Leslun’s limp body. The physician bowed briefly to Kailos before examining him.

Watching this, Robin removed his white gloves with a stiff expression. As he drew out a fresh pair and began to put them on, Kailos asked,

“You didn’t touch him. Why change gloves?”

“It unsettles me.”

“…I see.”

The physician spoke.

“A precise diagnosis will require further examination, but from what I’ve heard, ever since his release from prison he has not been able to eat at all.”

“…What?”

Kailos’s expression showed clear disbelief at Robin’s report.

“…Haa. Keep him here and monitor him.”

With a long sigh, Kailos gave his order.

When consciousness returned, the first thing Leslun felt was warmth.

Something was wrapping his entire body in softness, and he wanted nothing more than to sink into it and drift away.

He hadn’t rested properly in so long. If he just rested a little, he could act as though nothing was wrong again.

…But was he really in any position to do that?

“…Ugh.”

Startled, Leslun’s eyes flew open. He bolted upright, breath ragged.

He swallowed back the saliva rising in his throat and felt beneath his palms to confirm what he was touching. A bedcover. A feather-filled quilt, thick and soft—something he had never once laid under in his life.

Even embroidery was stitched across it. Luxurious. Far too out of place for him.

He was sure he had seen this before…

Still disoriented, he heard movement at his side.

“Well, that was sudden.”

The voice carried no surprise at all.

…The Crown Prince was sitting beside him.

Arms folded in a chair, one of Kailos’s eyebrows arched sharply like a blade.

Leslun bit the inside of his cheek, forcing himself to calm the shock that threatened to spill over. If not for the lesson engraved into him, that he must never act rashly before others, he might have actually jumped up in fright.

“Is springing up like you’ve just risen from a coffin some kind of habit?”

“My apologies.”

“Just words?”

At Kailos’s mischievous jab, Leslun scrambled to get out of bed. He meant to get down quickly and show proper respect, but the bed was larger than he expected, making it awkward.

On hands and knees, he tried to crawl out like an animal, but in that instant, something seized the back of his neck. His body was yanked back, and he toppled onto his back.

“Ahh!”

A strange sound escaped his lips. Blinking rapidly, he couldn’t immediately grasp what had just happened.

He had been trying to get down from the bed—so why was he lying flat again?

“Crawling about looks unsightly. Stay lying down.”

Leslun froze, remaining exactly as ordered. He knew it was unseemly to lie in the presence of royalty, but he had no right to disobey the Crown Prince’s command either.

His mind raced: what punishment awaited him for offending the Crown Prince? What if His Highness found it displeasing that someone as lowly as he had been touched?

“You know you’ve been unconscious for two days?”

“I’m sorry.”

“I thought I’d have to clear a corpse out of my chambers.”

“I apologi—…wait, what?”

The Crown Prince’s chambers?

“Why… why am I here…?”
