“When you became attached to the Crown Prince, you must have thought your situation would improve.”

The steward’s sneering was endless. Leslun watched his movements through the window while discreetly moving one hand.

“Your lowly status does not change no matter where you go.”

Men holding swords began to gather behind the steward one by one. It seemed the escape route was now completely cut off.

One of the men reached for the carriage door. It would not open. Only then did the steward realize Leslun had locked it and let out a short laugh.

“Using your head is useless.”

“At least I know one thing.”

Leslun had expected Count Camilo to come after him no matter what. He had already been grabbed by the hair once and threatened to bring back information.

Since then, Count Camilo had repeatedly failed to spirit him away. Leslun had even confirmed with his own eyes that his family was safe.

Because he had not been able to seize a proper weakness, Count Camilo would not easily give up the chance to capture him.

If he were taken now, the chances of coming out unharmed from a furious Count Camilo were slim.

“I will stay here. Tell the Count to come himself.”

“That will be troublesome.”

The steward’s eyes hardened.

“If you do not come out on your own, we will just drag you out.”

“Then do so.”

Leslun did not try to stop them.

The confident attitude made the steward’s eyes sweep the surroundings. When one of the men approached, apparently planning to break the window and drag Leslun out, the steward raised his hand to stop him.

Anyone who did not know Leslun might think his delicate appearance would make him easy to drag out, but the steward knew him well. His status might be low, but he was clever. There was no telling what plan he had come up with in the short time he was given.

“Bold of you.”

“If I do not go, His Highness the Crown Prince will come to find me.”

“We will return you anyway. All you are doing is angering him by wasting time.”

The steward reminded him of Count Camilo’s temper. Still, Leslun did not move.

“Then it is simple. He can come himself.”

“Insolent…”

The steward’s patience was not great.

“Do you think I cannot take you with me?”

“This carriage belongs to Duke Delta’s household. So does the coachman. If you damage anything, you will take full responsibility.”

“Ha. So that is why you are so confident. But did you forget?”

The steward pointed to the mask covering his face.

“No one will know who did it.”

“They will still find out.”

Leslun’s voice was quiet and steady.

He looked straight at the steward. For a moment, the steward faltered.

There was no fear or confusion in that gaze. Instead, it was as if Leslun was looking down on the situation, calm and cold.

That made it all the more infuriating. The steward ground his teeth, twisted his lips, and yanked the axe from the man standing next to him. He lifted it high over his head.

“The truth always comes to light in the end.”

The moment Leslun finished speaking,

Crash!

The sound of breaking glass rang out.

The window of the carriage shattered, shards of glass grazing Leslun as they fell.

The steward glared at the wrecked window, breathing harshly.

Leslun still did not move. He looked as though he had expected this much.

Growing more furious, the steward reached roughly through the broken window to grab Leslun by the collar.

Neigh!

The horse cried out loudly.

At first, they thought it was the horses hitched to the carriage.

No one expected anyone else to appear. And even if someone had, there were lookouts who should have given the alarm.

No one had even considered that the lookouts might have been taken out.

“You had better stop right there.”

At the unfamiliar voice, the steward’s hand flinched.

Leslun froze too. That voice was one he knew well.

It was Kailos.

He had wanted to see him, but he had not thought he would actually appear in person.

“No wonder I felt like coming to meet you.”

Kailos lightly leapt down from his horse. Yet the aura at his feet was heavy.

“You have touched what you should not have touched.”
