“I got my allowance. I’ll buy you something too, Gwonhyeok.”

“Bullshit. Buy yourself a headset. I heard the Swimming Club confiscated yours.”

I’m going to the department store to buy one, Jihwan-ah, I said as I tightly hugged Kim Jihwan, backpack and all. Maybe it was because I was in such a good mood today, but I felt as though I could laugh even if Kim Jihwan slapped me one more time.

“Can’t you get the old one back?”

“No. I can get it back, but I’m going to sell it secondhand once I do. I’ve used it for a long time too.”

There was no rule saying I couldn’t use secondhand marketplaces just because I had received 10 billion won. Even after getting my headset back, I planned to frugally turn it back into money and put it in my pocket.

“So, what do you like, Gwonhyeok-ah?”

At my question, Cha Gwonhyeok remained still as though thinking carefully, then scratched the back of his head.

“Rather than rice…”

“Ah, noodles instead of rice? Pasta? I knew it.”

I had thought Western food somehow suited him better than Korean food, and sure enough, he liked dishes such as pasta or steak. As expected of an obsessive top, I thought. But then.

“…Dessert.”

“Huh?”

A single word abruptly fell from Cha Gwonhyeok’s mouth. Hearing it from someone who looked as though he wouldn’t even acknowledge the existence of sweets made me grind to a halt like a toy whose batteries had died.

“…Cookie choux…”

Cookie choux.

An obsessive top who ate cookie choux.

An obsessive top who liked sweet custard cream inside a crisp cookie crust…

I felt an obsessive-top gestalt collapse coming on. I looked at Cha Gwonhyeok to see whether he was serious or joking. Cha Gwonhyeok’s ears were slightly red, as though he was embarrassed.

“Uh… Yeah, I’ll buy you some!”

I was in a good mood, so there was nothing I couldn’t buy him. I’ll buy you a hundred cookie choux, obsessive top.

It was now late October.

The scorching summer had disappeared somewhere, and the season was repeatedly preparing to transform into a chilly winter. It had lightly skipped over autumn altogether.

It had definitely only been pleasantly cool yesterday morning, but now this morning had suddenly become whoa, it’s cold. If this was going to be a world inside a novel, couldn’t it casually ignore something like abnormal weather? It was realistic in such pointless ways.

“Ugh, it’s f-f-fucking cold…!”

“Coach! Turn on the heater!”

The seals of the Swimming Club repeatedly entered and left the water today while wearing nothing but a single thin polyester swimsuit. The temperature of the water and the interior of the pool were regulated, but to conserve energy, they had been set at barely the recommended levels.

“Forget swimming, we’re going to freeze to death!”

“Our school is seriously fucking psychotic!”

Our school pool, which faithfully practiced energy conservation, maintained a slightly chilly temperature. The first-year Swimming Club members had grown accustomed to the hotspring-like warmth of private pools, so they were apparently deeply dissatisfied and had been making a fuss since morning, demanding that the temperature be raised.

“Even if our country works this hard to save energy, other countries will just…! Waaagh-!”

Splash! Splash!

Angered by the kids’ protest, Coach kicked the water and splashed the loudest one. Even Coach was dressed more warmly than usual today, wearing a tracksuit jacket and long pants when he normally wore a short-sleeved T-shirt.

“What if we catch colds! You’re freezing too, Coach!”

“Just endure it a little. You’re fine once you’re in the water anyway.”

Just as he said, the water temperature was around 28 degrees Celsius, so it was fine underwater. It was only unbearably horrible when we got out of the water or headed toward the showers. Even my sturdy body was shivering today.

Seriously, I’m going to make myself sick swimming like this.

“Anyway, anyone who wants to register for the competition at the end of December should follow me to the office later. It’s individual events this time, so only apply if you think you can handle it.”

With many of the second-years gone and the Swimming Club now packed with first-years who had joined less than a year ago, Coach didn’t appear to have high expectations for the December competition.

“Our main competition is in July, so let’s work hard until next year.”

The summer swimming competition in July that I hadn’t been able to participate in this year. It was the competition the first-years who had joined this year would spend the period leading up to their second year preparing for. I really wanted to compete next year, but would I be able to?

“Saint B, you’re entering the winter competition this December, right?”

“You seriously look like you’ll come away with something.”

The Swimming Club members naturally assumed I would participate in the December swimming competition.

“Nah, I think I want to rest in December.”

But I wasn’t particularly interested in this competition.

The kids widened their eyes and questioned me as though my response were unexpected.

“Huh, what?”

“You’re not just saying that, are you?”

I was truly sorry that I couldn’t live up to their expectations, but this was a world inside a novel. And if I couldn’t escape the broad framework of its story, an extremely major event was scheduled to occur during our first-year winter vacation.

“There isn’t much of our first year left now.”

I was nervous about the approaching events of the novel.
