“Are you playing some kind of no-lying game?”

Cha Gwonhyeok asked with a smile.

I already played the game, and I lost. That’s why I’m like this now. The penalty made it so I can’t lie.

“You said you love games. You really do play them seriously.”

“What kind of fucking lunatic shit is this? Hey, are you sure you don’t need to go to the emergency room?”

The barrage of questions from Cha Gwonhyeok and Kim Jihwan put me in an extremely difficult position.

Cha Gwonhyeok was hitting the heart of the matter, which made his questions difficult to answer. Kim Jihwan was missing the heart of the matter perfectly and looked ready to blow the situation completely out of proportion, which made his questions difficult in a different way.

“I am a T-rex!”

You have died.

Would you like to restart?

Yes / No

My head felt like it was about to explode, so I escaped through death.

Please, just let me rest for a moment. In the frozen world, I looked at the two guys who were studying my face intently.

“I don’t want Jihwan to worry even more.”

They couldn’t feel it, but I awkwardly stood in my soul form and patted Kim Jihwan’s round head a couple of times as though I could actually touch him.

It was admirable that he had thought I was sick and suggested going to the emergency room, and I felt sorry too.

“More importantly, Cha Gwonhyeok is the problem. I think he might be smarter than me.”

He was the type who dug into openings I hadn’t even noticed myself. Dealing with Cha Gwonhyeok was round two of the Liar Game, where I had to deceive him without lying.

“I really think I’ve used every trick I can come up with.”

Cha Gwonhyeok had managed to find an opening in all my desperate efforts. Continuing to try different things would only be pointless resistance.

How was I supposed to beat someone who was one step ahead of me?

“If worse comes to worst….”

I looked at the paring knife I was holding to peel the apples.

If I killed myself, the situation would reset. Wouldn’t I be able to erase a few lines of conversation?

“Mm… Still, I guess that’s not something I should do in front of kids who don’t know anything.”

The knife was short, so it would be an even bigger problem if I failed to die in one go. Just thinking about dealing with the aftermath made my head hurt.

“Should I tell them? That I transmigrated. Is there really any need to hide it?”

Suddenly, I looked at Kim Jihwan’s face.

Kim Jihwan, who had come to take care of me over nothing more than a cold and immediately took action when I started acting a little strange.

“What if he thinks I’m sick in the head too?”

All the ridiculous suffering the system had put me through was something only I had experienced. It was my story alone, and I couldn’t prove any of it to anyone else.

“If I show them the money in the suitcase….”

Then I’d complete the picture of Baek Hanrim, physically sick, mentally unstable, and suspiciously loaded with money. Yeah, I definitely shouldn’t do that.

“I don’t know. This is annoying. I want to sleep….”

Maybe because my body was sick, my mind felt weaker too. No matter how much I kept thinking in this state, no suitable solution came to mind. I emptied my head and pressed the ‘Yes’ button.

“You said you love games. You really do play them seriously.”

“What kind of fucking lunatic shit is this? Hey, are you sure you don’t need to go to the emergency room?”

The kids repeated what they had said before. I acted as though I were hearing it for the first time and answered calmly.

“Today is a day when I’m not allowed to lie.”

If tricks and schemes didn’t work, the only option was a frontal assault. My goal wasn’t to win by deceiving them perfectly. It was to get out of this situation.

“No… What the fuck are you talking about….”

Kim Jihwan glared at me with an expression that said, I worried about this lunatic for nothing, then sat back down and vigorously erased parts of his English essay before correcting the wrong sentences.

Okay, Kim Jihwan had calmed down.

“What happens if you succeed in not lying?”

Cha Gwonhyeok was the problem.

Instead of backing off, he became even more interested and started asking questions. I felt like I’d been watching him from beside him for about half a year now, but I still didn’t really understand Cha Gwonhyeok. Maybe his characterization kept shifting. I couldn’t tell which side of him was the real one.

“If I lie, I die. If I don’t, I live.”

“Isn’t there some kind of reward? Can’t you give up?”

“Living is the reward, I guess…. And I can’t give up. It’s mandatory.”

“Hahaha.”

Apparently finding something about this hilarious, Cha Gwonhyeok kept asking me all sorts of questions about the game I was playing.

“It’s basically just holding your life hostage. Living is your right, but it takes that away from you and uses it however it wants.”

You understand perfectly. You really are smart. Yeah.

“So, how long are you not going to lie?”

“For one day.”

“Does one day mean until midnight? Or twenty-four hours?”

Come to think of it, I didn’t know exactly how long this state would last.

If the system had even the slightest conscience, the Bad Liar penalty would end at midnight tonight. But if it had anything resembling a conscience, it wouldn’t have taken my life hostage and used it however it pleased in the first place.

I had to prepare for the worst-case scenario of twenty-four full hours.

“For now, I’m going to see how long I can manage.”

It didn’t seem like being unable to lie for one day would ruin my life too badly. I could just act like a strange person today and tomorrow, get through the crisis, and straighten everything out afterward.

“Then everything you say from now on will be true?”

Shrug.

I shrugged as though telling him to think whatever he wanted.

At that, Cha Gwonhyeok even saw through my trick of communicating nonverbally, saying, “So it only matters if you say it out loud?”

Scary bastard. There really are only two terrifying things in this world.

Ghosts, and Cha Gwonhyeok.

“Hanrim-ah, then-.”

While I was having the ridiculous thought of pitting Cha Gwonhyeok against a ghost, Cha Gwonhyeok began setting up another question. What was he going to ask this time?

I met Cha Gwonhyeok’s eyes. I could see his gaze focused entirely on me. Becoming conscious of how directly he was looking at me made me a little nervous.

I smiled to hide my tension. Cha Gwonhyeok smiled back.

And then he asked.

“What do you think of me?”
