“First, let’s hold the handrail and go up. I don’t know where we’ll end up, but we have to get out of here.”

“Uh, yeah….”

Kwon Jayoon fumbled as he tried to pull the money out of his shirt pocket.

“Haa… Jayoon-ah….”

Squeeze-.

“Ah.”

I grabbed his hand and squeezed it tightly. Only then did Kwon Jayoon look at me.

“You know we’re not supposed to put our hands in our pockets, right?”

“No, but they’re tucked in there so insecurely….”

Careful not to let his hand enter the pocket, as the rules instructed, I pulled the 50,000-won bills from his chest and placed them in Kwon Jayoon’s hand.

“If you’re confident, hold on to them for dear life.”

“Hey, fuck, if it’s money, I’ll never let go.”

Before Kwon Jayoon could even finish saying he would die with the money still clenched in his hand, a high-pitched laugh came from somewhere far away.

Tak, tadat, tak-.

“Huh? What’s that? Something’s coming this way.”

Giggle- Giggle-.

“Wait, that sounds like a kid laughing….”

“Holy shit, if it’s a kid…!”

Tatak, tak, taktaktak-.

The playful, bouncing footsteps suddenly sped up.

“Hee, heee- Hellooo-.”

I lowered my eyes and met the gaze of a child’s head rising from the staircase below.

More precisely, its head belonged to a child, but its neck was impossibly long and twisted, far beyond anything that could belong to a human. The moment I met its huge protruding eyes, like those of a dragonfly, an unpleasant chill brushed the back of my neck.

“Aagh! Run! Hurry!”

“Ah! We can’t run! Jayoon-ah!”

Kwon Jayoon shoved me and urged me forward. We moved quickly without running, but perhaps because we had been startled, the staircase stretched on without end.

The stairs would probably only end once we got our heart rates under control.

Taktaktaktaktaktak-.

“That bastard gets to run, so why the fuck do we have to walk!”

“Just take two or three steps at a time. Don’t get worked up. Think of something calming.”

Taktaktaktaktaktaktak-.

The situation wasn’t ideal, but Mafia Purple from before had been a quick thinker.

How could I calm him down?

To handle Kwon Jayoon….

“Jayoon-ah, what are you going to do once you get the money?”

“What? Why are you asking that all of a sudden?”

“There must be a reason you need money. What are you going to do once you get it?”

Money really was the best answer, wasn’t it? Kwon Jayoon’s concentration changed completely whenever money came up.

“If I get it… I’ll pay the interest and rent, pay my phone bill, buy some gifts, get my scars removed….”

“Yeah, what else?”

Kwon Jayoon looked noticeably calmer as he talked about what he would do with the money.

The common small-talk question of what someone would do if they suddenly received a large sum of money often helped ease tense feelings and atmospheres.

Tak, taktak….

“Ah.”

As we continued climbing the stairs in a calmer state, the child chasing us had disappeared.

And just like that, we reached the door to the rooftop. Without hesitation, I grabbed the handle and turned it.

Clunk, creak-.

“It opens. Should we go out onto the roof?”

I opened it slightly and turned back to ask Kwon Jayoon.

“Hey, wait. It’s supposed to be the rooftop, but there’s no wind coming in.”

Kwon Jayoon pointed out that although bright light was coming through, there was none of the draft that usually came when you opened a door leading outside.

He really was a clever character. He just got swept up in his emotions too easily and used his intelligence in bad ways.

“It just looks like the rooftop through the window.”

I looked outside through the window beside the door, which showed the rooftop.

“Look at the floor through the crack in the door. Through the window, the floor is concrete covered in green waterproof paint, but the floor in front of us is the wooden floor of a classroom.”

Now that Kwon Jayoon pointed it out, the textures of the floors were different.

As though cleanly cut off, beyond the iron door was a classroom’s wooden floor, and from inside came signs that someone was there. Did that mean what we could see through the window and what was actually there were different?

“Jayoon-ah, should I close it again?”

“If it were me, I’d slowly open it, look inside, then close it.”

“You mean you want me to look, right?”

“Baek Hanrim, can you trust me?”

I was at a loss for words.

Kwon Jayoon was taking advantage of the fact that in this situation, I wouldn’t abandon him even if I had to lie, as well as his own public reputation. He was using his head in a bad direction again.

“It’s because people like you scam others that the world becomes such a harsh place to live.”

“It’s this fucking world that makes bastards like me scam people.”

I cautiously poked my head through the narrow gap of the slightly opened door and looked inside. There were people standing there with pale faces, only their heads turned toward me as they stared.

Creeeak, click.

“What the hell, what was there? Why’d you close the door again?”

I immediately shut the rooftop door.

At that, Kwon Jayoon asked what I had seen. I hesitated for a moment over how to answer, then eventually told him the truth.

“…There was a classroom.”

“I can tell it’s a classroom just by looking at the floor. What, did you think it was the school field?”

“It was our classroom.”

Kwon Jayoon visibly recoiled at my answer and muttered a curse.

We had definitely opened the rooftop door, but it led back to the classroom where we had started.

What did that mean?
