“Uh… What?”

“You have a history, and almost all the kids are convinced. Who wouldn’t suspect you? They’d already decided you were the culprit and were ganging up on you.”

The moment someone had a record, they were already marked.

But I had caught a glimpse of the possibility that Kwon Jayoon really was being falsely accused. If that was the case, wouldn’t it be alright to at least hear why he felt wronged? Even if it was an excuse or a lie, it wouldn’t be too late to listen first and judge afterward.

“If you’re not the culprit, then you’re the one who has to change things.”

Could Kwon Jayoon change?

Would he choose to change himself?

“Make the choice that puts you in a better position. Stay calm.”

Kwon Jayoon, who appeared only in a brief line of text, only passing by in this novel.

What kind of person would you grow into?

Could I have any influence on you?

“Show your sincerity to someone who’s willing to listen.”

If Kwon Jayoon showed me his sincerity here….

“Tell me, Jayoon-ah.”

I think I might be able to find some possibility in you.

This fucking situation, and my situation that was even more fucking miserable.

Money, money, money. Fucking money. Shitty fucking money. I want to earn a fuckton of it, pile it all up, and set every last bit of it on fire. Then I want to jump into the flames myself, burn with it, and disappear from this world. Fucking goddamn money. It strangles your throat until you can’t breathe, but no matter how much fucking shit you go through, it still scatters between your fingers like grains of sand. Even after working myself bloody to finally hold it in my hands, all that ends up left on my palms are the nail marks I dug into them out of sheer rage. I feel so fucking sorry for myself I could die, fuck!

Noona

jayoon-ah, father’s here. don’t come home today.

After receiving Noona’s text, I stayed up all night at a twenty-four-hour unmanned café and went to school at dawn. I planned to spend the entire day sleeping like I was dead. Even though I was the son of a convicted criminal and had lived such a trashy life, causing so much shit that even the police kept a close eye on me, I liked school. I liked my status as a student. Because when I was at school, I felt a little more normal too.

“Kwon Jayoon! Wake up!”

I had been sleeping for quite a while when one of the guys in my class shook me awake. Maybe because this school was in a nice neighborhood, the facilities were good, and a lot of kids from well-off families attended. The bastard who woke me up was one of them. You could tell just by looking. He had the unmistakable air of someone who grew up loved. People are frighteningly good at spotting their own deficiencies in others.

“Why the fuck are you waking me up….”

“Did you steal my sneakers?!”

“What the fuck are you talking about, you crazy bastard….”

Thud!

My shoulder was shoved hard.

“Huh? You hit me?”

I shot out of my seat and shoved his shoulder hard too.

After a few rounds of shouting and punches, some guys showed up pretending to break it up, and people began gathering around. Fucking bastards always swarm in like a pack of dogs whenever there’s a fight.

“What happened? Why are you fighting?”

“They said Kwon Jayoon stole his sneakers.”

“Jeez- I thought he’d finally settled down after coming to high school….”

I had only been responding to the bastard attacking me, but at some point, I became the crazy one.

Should I not have gotten up and fought back?

But he hit me.

Whether I wanted to or not, I always made stupid choices, people always turned away from me because of them, and every situation went to fucking shit.

I hate them so much. Rich bastards. Bastards at this school.

I remembered the counselor’s face lighting up when they said I was the only basic livelihood security recipient in our grade, so I’d be able to receive all the benefits without missing any. Back then, I didn’t know anything and pretended to be happy about it too. Looking back, it felt so fucking disgusting that I wanted to drop out.

Even liking school costs money.

“Kwon Jayoon, did you really steal it?”

Amid all the voices criticizing and mocking me, I heard the only gentle one.

He was exactly the kind of bastard I hated.

“Fuck off! Just do what you always do and go get a teacher, Baek Hanrim!”

Popular bastard. And on top of that, a bastard with a good personality. A bright, carefree dumbass without a single shadow on his face. A bastard who acts like he’s the only person in the whole world, stirring up every last bit of inferiority I have. I seriously want to fucking kill him.

“…What do I have to do to make you listen to me?”

Seriously, what do I have to do to make my situation better? What the hell am I supposed to do to stop tormenting myself? Why won’t you give up on me?

Even I gave up on myself.

“Beg me.”

In the end, I said something stupid to Baek Hanrim.
