The room was utterly silent.
Amid the heavy silence, the second hand of the desk clock clearly engraved the passage of time with each tick.
With his arms crossed, Haster silently glared at Arden, who was unable to meet his gaze.
The ice in a glass of water shifted as it melted, making a faint clatter.
As though the sound had served as an alarm, Arden faced Haster with a noticeably calmer expression.
“I can explain.”
Hiding his unease, he put strength into his voice to make himself sound trustworthy.
“Then explain.”
Arden found himself at a loss beneath Haster’s terrifying gaze, which demanded an answer.
How had things ended up like this?
The atmosphere hadn’t been like this only thirty minutes ago.
This had all happened because of his niece.
Yes, Clary was the problem behind all of this.

Arden’s attendance at the salon was received positively.
Haster thought that would have been the case even if Arden hadn’t held the title of Crown Prince.
Arden was responsible, capable, approachable, and charismatic.
He was also a man of considerable learning.
Even when a difficult subject arose for discussion at the salon, Arden captivated everyone present with persuasive logic and witty eloquence.
Even while pressing his own opinion, he neither disparaged nor looked down upon the opinions of others.
He was gentlemanly and mature.
What would it have been like if he always behaved that way?
Haster expected that he would have viewed Arden a little more favorably than he did now.
No, perhaps much more favorably.
Even so, Arden had improved compared to before.
Clary’s presence must have influenced him.
Perhaps feeling responsible for the niece who had suddenly appeared, Arden spent time with her and showered her with attention.
‘It seems he’s taking unexpectedly good care of her.’
Indeed, he devoted himself more fervently than anyone else to his niece’s education and played the role of her guardian in his own way.
If he had no interest in her, he wouldn’t have gone so far as to personally arrange her class schedule.
“What are you thinking so hard about?”
Having finished the discussion before Haster realized it, Arden approached and picked up a petit four.
When Haster moved only his eyes to glance sideways, he saw the petit four disappear into Arden’s mouth.
“Nothing important.”
“If it’s nothing important, then you can tell me. What is it?”
After chewing and swallowing the petit four, Arden pressed him for an answer.
He truly never let anything pass without questioning it.
This man seemed unaware that this side of him made him bothersome.
Perhaps he simply didn’t care.
“I was thinking about how many days it has been since I last saw Clary. Since she has come to mind, I should visit her tomorrow.”
At Haster’s calm answer, Arden’s eyebrow twitched.
“What? Why would you visit her? She’s busy studying.”
“I am her godfather in name as well as fact. Isn’t it improper that I haven’t spoken to her for several days because of the interviews? Even if she is studying, she must have time for tea. I intend to see her then.”
