Why were they acting so out of character?

Had the genre changed?

She didn’t know.

‘Is it because they learned about my circumstances earlier than they did in the original story?’

The original Clary had also remained safe until she became an adult.

But it was still too early to relax.

Given the nature of the genre, one of them might suddenly barge into her room one day, say some bullshit like, ‘As a reward, I’ll punish you,’ and pull down his pants.

If that bastard Arthur had cared for Clary as a proper guardian should, none of this tragedy would have happened.

Arthur Lurie had been clever enough to steal the estate, but he wasn’t particularly intelligent.

A man with no talent for business and nothing but greed had squandered all the wealth Clyde had accumulated in the blink of an eye.

Every business venture he touched either ended with him being swindled or collapsed entirely.

He even turned to illegal gambling in an attempt to recover his fortune.

In the end, all that remained was the territory and residence, which couldn’t be sold to private individuals.

He was quite literally an empty shell.

Despite that, he continued spending lavishly, and as a result, creditors came to hound him nearly every day.

The reputation of the baronial family gradually faded.

Tormented by the stress and inferiority he felt at the possibility of losing the connections with high-ranking nobles that his family had cultivated for generations, Arthur visited his young niece every night and subjected her to violence.

Although Nam Eunjeong had taken over Clary’s body, she knew that the original Clary still existed somewhere within it.

Sometimes she became excessively conscious of other people’s reactions, and whenever she thought of Arthur Lurie, her mouth went dry and her palms became damp with sweat.

Even when she stood at the trial, she had felt the burdensome urge to run away regardless of her own will, which had left her considerably distressed.

Would she have to continue living like this?

Clary abruptly sprang out of bed.

This was all Arthur Lurie’s fault.

It was his fault that Clary hadn’t received a proper education and had become miserable.

The civil war and her wretched death were all that bastard’s fault!

She couldn’t remain still any longer.

She felt that she would only be satisfied after seeing that damned man’s face and confronting him, even if it was only once.

At a time when everyone was asleep, Clary put on a long robe that reached her ankles, picked up the fireplace poker beside the hearth for self-defense, and headed out.

Even though the wind was cold enough to sting her nose as it clawed at her face, she didn’t stop walking.

The jailer, who also served as the guard stationed at the tower, told her that he couldn’t let her inside, but when she continued pleading, he reluctantly gave in.

“Only five minutes. You must leave when the time is up.”

Clary nodded to the jailer as he sternly warned her, then climbed the tower.

Arthur Lurie was in a cell deep inside the tower.

The face visible through the long iron bars had grown thinner, but it was still just as irritating.

“Have you come to gloat?”

Clary shrugged at the provocation he threw at her without warning.

“You seem to be doing perfectly well. When I heard you were in prison, I was worried you might be getting by through selling your body to the guards, just like you sold your niece to an old man.”

“You bitch!”

The enraged Arthur thrust an arm through the bars and tried to seize his niece by the collar.

But Clary quickly stepped backward, so all he caught was the dry air.

“There’s something I want to ask you.”

She met the bastard’s trembling glare head-on and asked.

“Why in the world did you do that to me?”

The moment she asked the question, Clary knew she wouldn’t receive a proper answer, but she still had to ask.

“You are no different from the bones of a dead horse.”

Arthur Lurie’s lips twisted into a sneer filled with malicious delight.

“Just as I said, you’ve been useless since the moment you were born. They called Clyde intelligent, but look at what that great man did. He went to receive a medal from the Emperor, and what did he bring back to the territory instead of a medal? Because of my foolish brother, my chance to rise in the world was crushed.”

“……So that’s why you did those things to me?”

“If he blocked his younger brother’s path, he should at least have had the decency to hand over his wealth, but he had the gall to breed? If you hadn’t existed, that fortune would have become mine long ago. You are the filthiest, most useless thing in this world. Do you think rejecting your fate of being despised will make anyone treat you with respect?”

That was the end of it.

Scarlet rage engulfed Clary.

The tears surging into her eyes blurred everything around her.

“Die!”
