The owner of this body.

That is, ‘Rueg Verdic’ did not have good health.

Even at the moment he transmigrated into this body, he’d only woken up after a long bout of illness.

So, cleaning the fountain in the cold wind yesterday with a body like that… It would have been stranger if he hadn’t gotten sick.

‘I just need to finish my work and rest.’

Fortunately, today wasn’t so much about work. Felix had said he wanted to see what Rueg was best at. Besides, it wasn’t even one of the nights he had to sleep with Felix.

“Once I finish my tasks, I’ll just stop by the infirmary and get some medicine.”

Perfect.

Rueg walked with a satisfied expression.

For some reason, it felt like today would finally be the first perfect day since coming to the imperial palace.

…Or so he thought. Barely an hour had passed.

As his face started to feel like it was heating up, like someone had lit a fire, Rueg gripped his pen tighter.

Even his previously steady breathing had started to get ragged.

“Your skill at processing petitions is impressive. I’d have just pushed them all aside, but this—this is something I ought to learn from you.”

“……”

“Compared to that… your arithmetic is rather…”

At Felix’s words, Rueg pressed his lips together.

It hadn’t seemed like a difficult calculation. He couldn’t tell where he’d gone wrong.

“…I’m sorry…”

“There’s no need to apologize. I’m just checking. I should have realized you never learned arithmetic.”

I should say I did learn it.

I studied it until I was sick of it before transmigrating, I just didn’t know the units, so I got confused.

The problem was that he didn’t even have the strength to get those words out.

Even Felix’s voice sounded strangely distant, even though he was right there beside him.

With no response from Rueg, Felix, who’d been looking at documents, lifted his head.

“Verdic?”

Noticing something was wrong, Felix approached, and Rueg bit the inside of his mouth and spoke.

“It’s just… I don’t know what this unit means… Everything else, I did right…”

At Rueg’s mumbling, Felix leaned down to look him in the eye.

“Your face is red.”

“…No, no. I’m fine. Your Highness, could you just teach me this one thing?”

Muttering almost to himself, Rueg let out a shallow, ragged breath.

Felix naturally reached out as if to place his hand on Rueg’s forehead, but Rueg turned his head away and gripped the edge of the desk tightly.

“…Now doesn’t seem like the time for you to be learning this.”

Felix’s red eyes swept over Rueg’s body, as if telling him to just admit if he was sick. But Rueg stubbornly kept his lips shut.

‘He’s not a child.’

If he was sick, he could just say so and rest today. Felix couldn’t understand why he was being so stubborn.

Finally, with a sigh, Felix pushed the documents he’d been holding toward Rueg.

“Here—‘jeop’ is a unit meaning a bundle of 100. So you should have multiplied here.”

“Ah… then my calculation was wrong from here…”

Breathing shallowly, Rueg pulled the paper closer and started recalculating. Every time he blinked, his vision seemed to blur…

‘Just a little, just a little bit more…’

If he could just endure a little longer, today could turn out just as he’d planned.

So Rueg kept moving his pen for a while, then placed a period at the end of the total and looked up at Felix.

“Is this calculation right?”

“…Yes.”

“Hehe… then, I did both things well, right?”

Rueg looked at Felix, eyes shining. Would he say he’d done well?

Felix stared at him for a moment. Calculating the total was basic, but…

“…Yes, you did well.”

At that one word of praise, Rueg finally smiled, but then he started breathing even more heavily, as if exhaustion was hitting him all at once.

“Your Highness, it’s lunchtime now… so I’ll just sleep a bit… just a little bit…”

“……”

“I’ll just rest a little, then finish the rest of the work…”

Rueg’s eyes, already half-closed like sleep talking, slowly shut, and his head fell forward onto the desk.
