Rueg entered the office and quietly looked around the empty room.

“Your Highness…?”

Even with a voice full of anxiety, there was no reply.

Rueg, wearing a worried expression, cautiously approached his desk, where he found a note presumed to be left by Felix.

[ I’ll be away for a while. Finish the work on your desk.

If you finish quickly, you may take some free time. ]

The handwriting was more hurried than usual, as if Felix had left in a rush.

Staring at the note, Rueg let out a sigh of relief and lowered his gaze. In his hand was the shawl, now dust-stained from rolling around in the bushes.

“……”

Rueg unconsciously held his breath and curled up in his chair, hugging his arms around his shoulders. As he tensed up, his body began to tremble.

“Hic…”

He buried his face in his knees, hiding the tears that spilled down.

He’d talked as if nothing had happened while with Yuri, but the truth was, he’d been absolutely terrified. He really, truly thought he was going to die.

He didn’t understand why he had to go through something like this, and felt both miserable and oddly relieved that it hadn’t happened to Versha instead.

“Hic, sob…”

Clenching his fists, Rueg hugged the dirtied shawl tightly. For some reason, today of all days, he really wanted to feel someone’s warmth.

After sniffling in the office for quite a while, Rueg finally lifted his head. The pretty shawl now had clearly visible tear stains where his eyes had been.

“His Highness gave this to me…”

What if Felix got angry for using it so carelessly?

“I wonder if I can get this out by hand washing it…”

He tried rubbing the dirt with his finger, but it only got dirtier.

Seeing that, the sadness surged again, and it felt like his tears would start all over after just having stopped.

“…No, stop crying. I have to stop crying now. Stop crying and think about what to do next.”

Versha had said this once.

If you want to cry, then cry your heart out, and after that, think about how to solve things.

If you always wait for someone else to fix your problems, in the end, you won’t be able to do anything by yourself.

“Yeah, let’s start with what I need to do now.”

The dirty shawl can be washed later.

And right now, as an aide, he needed to process the paperwork on his desk.

“But before that…”

Rueg touched his forehead, which had started to feel hot again.

His cheek, already swollen from being hit, was burning, and after all the crying, his eyes and forehead felt hot too.

“I should just take some medicine…”

After running a fever yesterday, he probably hadn’t completely shaken off the cold. Better to take medicine now and deal with things neatly, rather than get even sicker later.

“Felix might even say, ‘Well done’, and praise me.”

“Alright, let’s do it. If anyone asks about the injuries… I’ll just tell them everything.”

If no one asks, then he’d just be sure to avoid that Dorivance or Dorabance guy from now on.

“Or maybe I should learn swordsmanship? If I knew how to protect myself, I wouldn’t have to run away all the time. But do I even have the strength to hold a sword? Those things are heavier than they look…”

Unlike the weak Rueg, Versha could almost fly with a sword in her hand, despite its weight.

But Rueg had always struggled to even lift a sword with one hand. He remembered getting scolded a lot by the sword instructor when he was a kid…

“Huh?”

Grabbing the doorknob to leave for the infirmary, Rueg was suddenly struck by a strange thought.

‘Did I ever learn swordsmanship…?’

No, he’d seen swords, but he didn’t remember ever holding one. He never even had a sword instructor.

So why did he think he’d learned before?

Maybe it was the memories of this body’s original owner mixing in. After all, he’d taken a pretty hard hit to the head, so it wasn’t entirely impossible.

‘I’ll have to ask Sister when I see her.’

Just as he thought that and stepped outside the office—

Smack!

A loud noise, and in the next instant, a shock strong enough to make stars appear in his vision.

Before he even felt the pain, Rueg’s body went limp. He soon felt someone roughly grab him by the collar and drag him away.

“Your Highness, Your Highness, help… please help…”

Barely able to form words, Rueg lost consciousness completely.
