A World Where You All Are The Villains - Chapter 29.2
Sulking.
It was astonishing that something which could be a matter of life and death for one person could be dismissed as mere ‘sulking’ by someone else.
“You have to understand. I’ve been so out of it lately, searching for Llewellyn. It’s been ages since I even gave you flowers…”
“……”
“So I just, just forgot for a moment. Only for a moment. It’s not like I really forgot.”
“……”
“It really wasn’t on purpose, I swear. So, as an apology…”
“Vincent.”
“Yeah?”
“When did I ever ask you to apologize to me?”
As I cut off his rambling and asked back, his mouth snapped shut.
For a moment, his golden eyes wavered as he looked at me.
I just looked at him indifferently.
“We already talked about everything that day. And besides, I don’t even remember who you are, so I’m not mad at you.”
At those words, Vincent’s jaw jutted out.
He spat his words out short, as if holding something back.
“Now you do. You know who I am.”
“So what if I know your name and age? I still don’t know what kind of person you are.”
“Then you can start getting to know me again, from now on.”
“Why bother? Why should I?”
“Because you and I have been friends for thirteen years.”
“Friends…”
I almost laughed.
‘You ignored me when I was dying, and now you talk about friendship?’
The only reason I didn’t sneer to his face was, ridiculously, because he looked so serious when he said it.
‘If I provoke him too much and he uses his ability, that’ll be trouble.’
So I decided to just play along with him.
“Is that so…”
“Do you get it now, Edith? Don’t tell me you’ve forgotten what friendship is too?”
“Yeah.”
I nodded obediently to his teasing, then immediately declared,
“Then let’s stop being friends, Vincent. Right now.”
“…What?”
“Let’s stop being friends.”
He looked bewildered, as if he’d never heard the word before.
He stared blankly at me, then eventually let out a hollow laugh.
“…Ha! What are you, a child? Who breaks off friendships like that, Edith?”
“I’m serious. I don’t want to be friends with you anymore.”
“I told you to think before you speak. Don’t just blurt out whatever comes to mind.”
He shot back coldly, his once cheerful face turning hard and rigid.
I could feel a faint murderous intent from him, so angry was he.
‘He gets this angry just because I said we should stop being friends?’
His unexpected reaction left me a little unsettled.
— I thought you’d really just die this time, but you somehow managed to come back.
When he’d shown up recently just to hurl curses at me, so why was he now clinging to a relationship that was already broken?
As I just stared at him blankly, Vincent grumbled irritably.
“How much are you going to regret this later, acting however you want just because you’ve lost your memory for a bit?”
“I’ll let the future me worry about that.”
“You…”
Maybe it was because I wasn’t giving him the answer he wanted, even with his thinly veiled threats.
After taking a deep breath to calm his anger, he slowly reined in his leaking hostility.
“…Let’s stop. I don’t want to fight with you on a day like this.”
How unfortunate for him.
The moment I saw his face, any chance of this being a good day for me was long gone.
‘But why is today a good day? Because he’s on his way to see the female lead?’
Come to think of it, I really couldn’t understand why he was here with me instead of asking the female lead to be his partner.
“…There’s something I want to know.”
“What?”
“Why didn’t you go to the Purifier?”
Vincent’s expression turned strange at my question.
“I thought you’d be happy if I came to you instead of Llewellyn… Oh, I guess you’re too much of an idiot now to understand?”
He muttered to himself, then continued in a smug tone,
“You used to beg me to be your partner all the time, Edith. So I picked you this time, to apologize for last time.”
“Did you two fight or something?”
“Even if you lost your memory, is that the only low-level question you can come up with?”
He snorted and sneered at me, then started answering questions I hadn’t even asked.
“Of course there’s nothing wrong between us. The only problem is that I’m not the only one asking Llewellyn to be my partner.”
“……”
“Haa… She’s too nice for her own good. I bet even today, she’ll pick the most hopeless bastard out of the bunch.”
That lined up with the story. Even if I couldn’t see their rampage stats, the female lead would surely be able to see through Vincent’s little acts.
Just as he said, she was so kind and gentle that even at banquets, she used every spare moment to purify the male leads.
Remembering that, I nodded.
Finally, he revealed the ‘real reason’ he’d come to be my partner today.
“I want Llewellyn to come to me on her own. For that, I need a bait that will provoke her a little.”
He looked me straight in the eyes and said gently.
Telling me, in no uncertain terms, that I was just the bait to make Llewellyn jealous.
Then, with his golden eyes sparkling like a child expecting a gift, he asked,
“…Are you mad, Edith?”
