Anyway, since they were worried, they must have paid a hefty price to call for a healer.

Most abilities manifest in forms suited for attack, so healer-type Awakened were so rare that their price was said to be whatever you could offer.

Since this novel borrows a modern setting, the situation here is probably similar.

“Amazing.”

At that moment, the woman who had just taken her hands off my body quickly turned away.

“There are no signs of internal or external injury on the Ducal Lady’s body at all. This is really… like a miracle, isn’t it?”

The woman spoke with a surprised expression to the two men standing far from the bed.

I glanced at the two men, who had been exuding an overwhelming aura with their expressionless faces from earlier.

A middle-aged man with platinum blond hair who looked just like Edith, and a young man with sparkling silver hair.

Even without hearing who they were, I could easily identify them from the physical descriptions in the novel.

‘Her biological father, the Duke, and the adopted son who was made his successor in place of his real daughter.’

Even after hearing that their daughter or younger sister’s body was completely fine, their expressions were still hard as stone.

They didn’t look happy at all.

‘Isn’t that a bit much? Their dead daughter has miraculously come back to life, after all…’

Though, to be honest, she hadn’t come back to life at all, and her whereabouts were completely unknown.

There was a good chance she was just dead for good.

Just as I frowned slightly, the doctor who had been busy with something in the corner hurried over to the Duke.

“No miasma was detected either, Your Grace!”

“……”

“There are no traces of necrosis in the extremities, and her bodily reactions are normal, so there are no signs of miasma erosion whatsoever. Please, look!”

The doctor held out a glass vial to the Duke.

In the vial—where he had put my blood and hair earlier—small goldfish were swimming leisurely in the water.

“As Miss Eston said, fortunately, the Ducal Lady seems to be perfectly fine.”

“……”

The Duke barely glanced at the vial, remaining silent.

I looked at the vial and pouted secretly to myself.

‘What the, so it wasn’t a DNA test but a miasma test?’

Well, there’s no way they’d have something like that here anyway.

I was relieved that I wasn’t under suspicion, but it still bothered me that they checked if I’d been exposed to miasma.

Exposure to the black mist—or miasma, as it’s called in the novel—drives people insane and eventually causes them to rot and die.

Even without taking blood, you’d be able to tell just by looking.

Some people even donate their organs to save children exposed to miasma.

Instead of rejoicing over their daughter’s resurrection, they’re busy checking for miasma erosion.

‘The way these people are treating me, honestly…’

I already knew Edith was treated like an outcast, but experiencing it firsthand was just plain bitter.

‘If I was going to get transmigrated anyway, couldn’t it have been as the female lead!’

Why did I have to end up all the way here just to be treated like unwanted baggage?

I stifled an irritated sigh, and just then, instead of the Duke who had been silent, the handsome silver-haired man next to him spoke up.

“They said she was found in the jaws of a monster. Is that even possible?”

“Until the incident, she was with Miss Llewellyn, so maybe she was affected by purification…”

“So you’re saying the death certificate was a misdiagnosis on your part.”

“A-A misdiagnosis, sir?!”

Startled by the man’s icy words, the doctor frantically waved his hands.

“No, my lord. I checked several times to confirm that the lady wasn’t breathing!”

“If it wasn’t a misdiagnosis, how do you explain this situation?”

The man suddenly jerked his chin toward me, still sitting on the bed.

Wiping sweat from his brow, the doctor replied,

“Uh… I believe she suffered a brief cardiac arrest from the shock of the incident…”

“You’re saying cardiac arrest can last more than three days?”

The man let out a cold, derisive snort.

“Do you know what people outside are saying right now?”

“What do you mean…?”

“They’re saying the Duke’s daughter was exposed to miasma for so long that she turned into a monster and came back to life.”

“T-That’s…”

“All the nobles who attended the funeral are now in an uproar, afraid they’ve been exposed to miasma too. What should we announce? That it was cardiac arrest, but not a misdiagnosis? What kind of nonsense is that…”

“Enough. That’s enough, Ethan.”

At that, the Duke cut off the man who was sarcastically badgering the doctor.

“In any case, it’s a relief that no miasma was detected.”

“But Father, the Emperor’s envoy is already on the way…”

“Edith Blake.”

Interrupting the young man, the Duke suddenly called my name.

While I silently observed their conversation, I raised my head to meet his eyes.

“What were you thinking, taking a Purifier all the way to the site of a Gate outbreak?”

“……”

“Do you have any idea how many people have suffered because of you alone?”

I just blinked.

No matter how much of a burden I was seen as, I didn’t expect to be blamed the moment I came back to life.

‘Hmm, the Purifier he’s talking about must be the female lead. Anyway, he’s saying things got complicated because of the people who attended the funeral.’

So what am I supposed to do?

It wasn’t even my doing.

Even if the real Edith was here, it’s not like she would have known it would turn out this way.

“You don’t have multiple lives. Nor do you have any special ability. What on earth were you thinking, doing something so reckless!”

“……”

“If something had happened to the Purifier, how were you planning to handle it…”

As his anger seemed to rise in intensity, the Duke’s voice turned harsh, but then he suddenly furrowed his brows.

“Why are you just sitting there, staring without even answering?”

Because I have nothing to say.

But I couldn’t exactly say that, so I just shot off the only cliché I knew.

“Excuse me, but… Who are you?”
