“Crazy…!”

Crunch!

As I trembled with rage and crushed the letter in my hand, the butler’s eyes widened.

“What kind of letter is it that your expression looks like that, Milady?”

“…It’s a cursed letter.”

“C-Curse?!”

He was horrified by my reply.

“What kind of sinister person would send such a thing…! Please give it to me, Milady! I will investigate and uncover everything!”

“It’s fine. I already read it, so what’s the point of uncovering it now?”

“But…”

Riiiip―

So he wouldn’t question me further, I tore the letter into tiny pieces.

Then, with a thoroughly exhausted face, I gave an order.

“Butler, I’m in severe psychological shock, so could you call Eston for me?”

“Yes! I’ll bring her right away!”

Fortunately, the butler did not press further and hurried out of the room.

“Haa…”

I let out a deep sigh and pressed a hand to my head.

For a moment, I wondered which part of the curse letter I had read earlier was more dreadful, the former or the latter.

No matter how I thought about it, it was the latter.

Knock knock.

“Milady! I’ve brought Eston!”

Right on time, the butler returned with my one and only ally.

Now it was time to figure out how to leave the ducal estate before midnight in order to avoid the curse.

Having a healer as an ally was useful in many ways.

Eston borrowed a cargo wagon under the pretense that she needed to fetch medicinal herbs that only grew in her hometown for her sick employer.

I packed the robe I had worn on the previous trip to Volner and some of the remaining gold coins the Duke had given me.

Since it was late at night and everyone was asleep, it wasn’t very difficult to slip out through the back gate of the mansion.

“Hah. Seriously, Milady… does it have to be this late at night? Not even daytime, but this hour?!”

As soon as I climbed into the wagon, Eston began scolding me until my ears rang.

I replied gloomily.

“I know.”

“You’re not going to tell me why you’re going this time either, are you?”

“……”

It wasn’t that I wouldn’t tell her. I couldn’t.

‘I don’t even know why I’m going, so how could I explain it.’

And I certainly couldn’t say I had made a deal with that insane Grand Duke.

When I kept my mouth shut with a depressed expression, Eston let out a short sigh and held something out to me.

“Here. What you asked for.”

It was a perfume bottle filled with a transparent liquid, the same kind she had given me for self-defense during the last trip to Volner.

“The duration is about two hours, so keep that in mind.”

“…Thanks, Eston.”

“Are you going to steal something or something? Why does Your Ladyship even need something like this?”

“Here, this is for your trouble.”

Ignoring her question, which clearly made no sense to her, I held out the gold coins I had prepared in advance.

Her brows immediately furrowed sharply.

“No thanks. Do you think I’m someone crazy about money?!”

“Take it. I’ll feel uncomfortable if you don’t.”

“Then think of this as a complimentary service.”

Eston grumbled, giving me a displeased look.

“Thanks to the ring you gave me last time, I paid off half my debt.”

“Then you can use this to pay off the rest.”

“I get a salary too, you know?”

She added in disbelief.

“You hired me to handle these kinds of small tasks in the first place, so why do you keep trying to turn it into a transaction every time? Compared to the abuse of authority I suffered at the Imperial Palace, what you ask me to do isn’t even worth mentioning, so don’t worry about it.”

“But I’m not the one who hired you.”

“When have you ever worried about things like that, Milady? When you threatened to report me to the Security Bureau, remember…”

That made me feel a little awkward.

“…You really won’t take it?”

“You said we’re in the same boat anyway, and if you go down, I go down too, right? I’ll help you with all my sincerity, so don’t worry. If I need anything, I’ll ask you myself.”

She refused so firmly that I had nothing more to say.

‘Is this really okay.’

I hesitated for a moment as I put away the perfume bottle she had given me.

Then Eston burst out, raising her voice.

“D-Don’t make that doubtful face again! I’m tight-lipped, you know?!”

“…Was it that obvious?”

“Milady!”

While I was bickering with Eston, we quickly arrived at our destination.

Legion Street, located on the outskirts of the capital, was a somewhat run-down neighborhood where commoners lived in crowded numbers.

The street, lined with shops that had closed early, was dark and secluded.

“The public safety isn’t even good, so why of all places here…”

Eston clicked her tongue as she looked out the window.

I felt the same.
