A World Where You All Are The Villains - Chapter 6.1
When the Duke asked me that yesterday, I couldn’t say anything in reply.
‘What kind of plan could I have had? A villain just did what villains do.’
The novel never clearly explained why Edith dragged Llewellyn to the Gate.
She had always regarded Llewellyn as a thorn in her side, anyway…
If you wanted to get specific, maybe it was because the male leads, one after another, asked Llewellyn to dance at the banquet, and Edith was ridiculed for it?
But does a villain really need a solid motive for their bad deeds?
‘Yeah. This is about where an assassination attempt should crop up.’
I just figured it was another crisis the protagonist had to face, so I skimmed through it.
「 Small-scale Gates appeared simultaneously all across the Empire.
The male leads scattered to various regions for subjugation missions.
And then, of all times, a Gate broke out near the capital as well.
Edith took advantage of the situation, kidnapped Llewellyn, and dragged her there.
They were attacked by monsters, and the carriage carrying the two of them was sucked into the Gate… 」
I searched my memory for the chapter where Edith dies.
I thought she dragged Llewellyn to the Gate site to commit the perfect crime.
The setup was that the kind and gentle female lead traveled around purifying miasma for the sake of the world, even without the male leads.
‘Did she plan to say she died in an unfortunate accident while going to purify miasma?’
It was a pretty fitting plan for an assassination attempt.
But the whole episode struck me as ridiculous.
‘No but I mean, why would a duke’s daughter do the job herself? Didn’t she even try to create an alibi?’
She could’ve just had a servant do it, or hired an assassin to kill her and come back.
The idea of powerless Edith personally going to kill the female lead seemed like such a sloppy plot progression.
I thought maybe the author was just forcing the plot to emphasize the villain’s miserable downfall…
“…Milady, are you alright?”
Suddenly, Nancy’s voice brought me out of my thoughts.
She was looking at me in alarm because I’d stopped eating.
“Is the food not to your liking?”
“…No.”
“It’s just, your expression looked so troubled…”
At her words, I put down my fork completely.
I felt uncomfortably full, as if I’d just learned something that was hard to digest.
“Sorry. I just don’t have much of an appetite.”
“Shall I bring you some dessert?”
“It’s alright, don’t worry about me. Could you just clear the table?”
When I forced a smile, Nancy quickly gathered the dishes and left the room.
Turning my head absently as she left, I caught a glimpse of myself in the large window beside the table.
“…Ah.”
I was momentarily dazed by the unfamiliar reflection.
Gorgeous golden hair shining in the sunlight, deep blue eyes like crashing waves.
Flawless, almost translucent white skin, with alluring eyes and rosy lips painted like a picture.
‘So this is me now.’
Lost in a strange feeling, I raised my hand and stroked one cheek.
For someone considered nothing more than a wretched villain who screamed and died, Edith was terribly beautiful.
“…So young and pretty… Why did you cling to such useless things all your life?”
Maybe my earlier theory was wrong.
Perhaps Edith really did kidnap Llewellyn to kill her, not just to protect the villa.
But even so, I still couldn’t see her as truly wicked.
To me, it was just her desperate struggle to survive, and at least I could understand that.
I only felt a bit sorry and sympathetic towards her, whose body I now occupied, and who had disappeared somewhere I didn’t know.
“I won’t live my life begging for attention like you did.”
I lowered my hand from my cheek and recited coldly.
Maybe because of my wide eyes, the innocent look vanished from my face in an instant.
As I looked at the cold, arrogant face in the window, I finally thought, this really is the look of a villainess.
“I might end up destroying everything you cherished and loved.”
Ethan’s rampage meter from yesterday flashed through my mind.
Whether it was the Duke or the male leads, if I honestly revealed my ability and embraced them, I could easily improve my relationships with all of them.
But I had no intention of doing that.
‘Why should I? What would I gain?’
It was Edith who wanted them, not me.
If I needed to, I was ready to cut all ties and live the way I had in the real world.
There was nothing to be gained by keeping stressors close.
“So don’t be too resentful.”
If, just as I was resurrected in your body, another miracle were to occur…
‘Maybe everything would return to its proper place.’
After whispering one last time to the poor girl who had disappeared, I got up without a trace of regret.
Now, I was Edith Blake.
