After my bath, Nancy sat me down at the vanity, carefully dried my hair, and then neatly braided it to one side.

“How do you like it, Milady? Do you like it?”

She finished by pinning a dainty lilac corsage into the braid and looked at me with eyes full of anticipation.

Not that anything wouldn’t suit this stunning appearance, but tying my hair up took away the childishness and made me look like a proper, elegant young noblewoman.

Looking in the mirror, I nodded in satisfaction.

“Yes. You’re really skilled, aren’t you?”

“Hehe.”

I smiled gently back at Nancy, who beamed with pride.

“Nancy, could you go down and let them know I’d like to get ready to go out?”

At that moment, Nancy’s smile vanished.

“G…o out?”

“Yes. I need a carriage.”

“Uh…”

Her eyes trembled as if in an earthquake.

I’d expected it wouldn’t be easy to leave, and it looked like orders had already been given.

As I looked at her, waiting to see what she’d do, Nancy squeezed her eyes shut and blurted out,

“I-I’ll ask the butler first and be right back!”

“When you get back, I’d appreciate it if you could help me pick out something to wear, too.”

I waved lightly as she hurried out of the room.

‘Not bad.’

I’d wondered what to do if she ignored me and put the duke’s orders first, but so far Nancy listened to me without issue.

Since I’d have to live here from now on, I needed a reliable helper.

While I was still gauging just how much Nancy favored Edith, she returned.

“Milady! You… you want to go out?!”

Unfortunately, it looked like a no.

The butler, whom I’d only glimpsed yesterday, came rushing in, his face ashen.

“Where are you trying to go?”

“Well, I just feel a bit cooped up from being stuck at home. I thought I’d get some fresh air.”

“Your Ladyship only woke up yesterday. For your recovery, it would be best to avoid going out for a while.”

“But the doctor said I was fine, didn’t he, Butler? I heard it myself yesterday.”

“But your memory hasn’t fully returned yet…”

“Why?”

I tilted my head and gave a sweet smile.

“Did Father tell you not to let me out?”

“Th-that…!”

He seemed caught off guard, his mouth opening and closing.

I scrunched my face in playful annoyance.

“It’s been a week since I got up… that’s a bit much, don’t you think?”

“……”

“Actually, I wanted to go to Ezenia. Nancy told me about the villa. She said it was my favorite place because of the memories with my grandmother.”

“Milady…”

The butler, who had been so intent on stopping me from leaving, now looked at me with a hint of pity on his stern face.

‘As I thought.’

Bringing up the late Duchess was bound to work.

Edith lost her mother young and was cast aside by her father for not awakening.

That she managed to grow up so haughtily clearly meant her grandmother’s influence permeated the house.

If not for that, she’d have ended up ignored by the servants and grown up as someone who couldn’t even speak up for herself.

To keep her chin up and look people in the eye in that kind of environment took a tremendous effort. I, who knew that better than anyone, gave a bitter smile.

“To be honest, I’m scared because I don’t remember anything. I just thought if I went there, maybe something would come back to me. Hearing about my grandmother made my heart flutter.”

“……”

“I’ll come back before Father returns. Could you please turn a blind eye just this once? Hmm?”

There was no point getting angry like the original Edith with someone so loyal to the duke.

Acting pitiful and evoking sympathy, as expected, made the butler hesitate.

“…Milady.”

“……”

“His Grace’s orders are important, and I really think you shouldn’t go to Ezenia right now.”

He shook his head, looking at me with sad eyes.

I already knew from Nancy that Ethan had gone there first, but I asked, pretending not to know anything.

“Why?”

“Well, if you went there now, you’d just end up being pelted with stones, that’s why.”

The answer came not from the butler, but from an unexpected source.
