“They say you’re the most vicious villainess in the Empire. Did you go somewhere to get a character lesson? I didn’t expect you to be this righteous.”

“Mmph! Mmph!”

“How are you planning to deal with all these people by yourself? Knock every single one of them out? Impressive.”

“Mmmph, mmmph…!”

I can’t breathe! What the hell are you doing, you lunatic!

As I shook my head wildly and cursed at him with my eyes, he bared his teeth and grinned as if he found it amusing.

Then he took a handkerchief out of his pocket and replaced his hand, which had been covering my mouth and nose, with it.

“It’s Hesis. Cover your mouth and nose tightly with this and hold your breath as long as you can.”

I didn’t even have time to remember that it was the same handkerchief he had carefully used to wipe his hand earlier.

‘Hesis? What’s that?’

At the questioning look in my eyes, he gestured somewhere with his gaze.

“A hallucinogen. It’s a type of drug, and if you’re exposed for too long, you can get addicted.”

“……!”

“Tsk. So this is how they’ve been stopping people from leaving.”

He wasn’t lying.

Fwoooosh…

From the lower parts of the walls on both sides of the door behind us, a faint wind began to blow, and a hazy smoke slowly seeped out.

I stopped resisting and quickly pressed the handkerchief he gave me tightly over my mouth and nose with both hands.

Then a thought suddenly occurred to me.

‘…But is it okay if only I’m covered?’

Unlike me, Serge was standing there openly with his face exposed.

“Now. Everyone, take a deep breath and release it. Entrust your body completely to Sephirot’s touch…”

Right then, the speaker whispered in a low, suggestive voice, as if hypnotizing them.

The chaos that had been on the platform earlier had already been cleaned up.

Baron Gavent and his son were gone, and the cage holding the Corrupted had been covered with the curtain again.

“Ahh… I can feel Sephirot’s touch…”

“Hngh… over there, paradise…!”

The smoke pouring out grew thicker and thicker.

Perhaps the drug was already taking effect, because the murmuring believers began to stagger and collapse one by one.

In contrast, the speaker and the large men stationed throughout the area remained perfectly fine, as if they had taken some kind of precaution.

I looked at Serge with unsteady eyes.

Was it just my imagination, or did his gaze seem more relaxed than before?

‘We need to get out of here quickly!’

I hurriedly shoved one hand into my pocket and gripped the perfume bottle tightly.

None of the large men standing around were Awakeners.

That meant there wasn’t a single person I could knock out with purification.

If Serge tried to use me again in this situation…

‘…Then I’ll have no choice but to get exposed.’

No matter how much I held my breath, there was nothing I could do about skin contact.

Normally, I would have come up with some excuse.

But my head wasn’t working properly.

For a moment, my vision blurred, then suddenly sharpened again.

That wasn’t a good sign.

“You there! What are you doing right now! Don’t tell me you’re covering your nose with a handkerchief?”

To make matters worse, one of the large men, suspicious that we were still sitting normally, began walking toward us.

I quickly grabbed Serge by the collar.

“……?”

But for some reason, he didn’t move at all.

Just as I began shaking his collar in panic.

“Wait.”

He was staring straight ahead with chilling eyes, as if he hadn’t been affected by the drug at all.

‘What are you doing!’

Frustrated, I was just about to speak.

Clink. Clink… Clank!

Suddenly, loud metallic noises echoed through the silent hall.

Clank, clank! Rattle!

“W-What is that?!”

At the chain-like sounds ringing out one after another, the large men standing nearby flinched and looked forward.

Rustle.

At the same time, the curtain covering the cage slid down.

Click, creak…

No one had touched it, yet the cage door slowly opened on its own.

“W-What…!”

“Grrr!”

“Kieeeek!”

“Kyaaah!”

And before anyone could react, the Corrupted burst out of the cage all at once.

“Aaaah!”

“S-Stop them!”

“The Awakeners… gghk!”

Freed from their chains, the Corrupted began biting anyone they saw.

The speaker and the large men were no exception.

Panicking and disorganized, they were quickly reduced to prey.

The believers, still intoxicated by hallucinations, were no different.

“Kyaaaaah!”

“Grrr!”

“Ugh, gghk!”

“Ahh, Sephirot…!”

Blood sprayed and splattered through the air.

Screams.

Ecstasy.

Chaos.

Frenzy.

The hall turned into complete pandemonium in an instant.

Frozen stiff, I turned to look at the person who had caused all of this.

‘Why…?’

I couldn’t understand.

Why would he deliberately release the Corrupted and create a disaster like this?

Perhaps he sensed the doubt in my eyes.

The man suddenly smiled brightly.

And then he said.

“I told you I wouldn’t kill them with my own hands. I never said I wouldn’t let them destroy themselves.”
