Unlike his twisted smile, his eyes weren’t smiling at all.

His black pupils were greatly dilated, gleaming like a reptile’s.

They weren’t the unfocused eyes of someone intoxicated by drugs.

If anything…

They looked like the eyes of someone right on the verge of rampage.

‘This bastard isn’t in his right mind.’

I flinched and checked the number above his head.

81%

But the rampage level hadn’t changed.

Then why was he smiling like a lunatic?

“Kyaaaaah!”

“Keeeeek!”

I was staring at the man, who was watching the frenzy he created with satisfaction, with unfamiliar eyes when.

“Y-You! Who are you people!”

A few of the large men by the entrance, who had been thrown into chaos by the sudden escape of the Corrupted, spotted us standing there and shouted.

“Oh. We’ve been found?”

Even as they rushed toward us, Serge merely shrugged calmly.

Then he waved one hand lazily through the air.

Whoosh―!

“Aaaagh! Ugh!”

“Kugh!”

The large men were sent flying like sheets of paper and slammed into the wall.

Another man who had been running behind them turned pale and came to a sudden stop.

“Ugh! I, intruders! An, an Awakener…!”

He screamed and hurriedly turned around.

As he ran toward the wall beside the entrance and reached out for something.

Crack!

A chilling sound rang out.

At once, the man collapsed like a puppet with its strings cut.

‘Insane… did he just snap his neck?’

I froze with my mouth open at what happened in the blink of an eye.

Ringgggg―!

Suddenly, a loud alarm blared.

I instinctively shrank my neck, and Serge curled his lips in mockery.

“What admirable devotion. Even while dying, he fulfills his duty.”

Just as he said, the fallen man’s clothing had caught on a strange rod protruding from the wall.

Looking closely, it seemed to be a lever used to trigger an emergency alarm.

Fortunately, the ear-splitting noise soon stopped.

Crack!

Serge had used telekinesis to tear the lever out entirely.

But it had been enough time for everyone in the building to realize there were intruders.

“W-What do we do, Your Highness?”

“What do you mean what do we do? Let’s run before those things come over here and start biting us too.”

At his signal, I turned around.

The Corrupted, sensitive to sound, had all stopped moving and were staring this way, black fluid dripping from them.

“Grrr… Kraaah!”

“Eek!”

The nearest one suddenly lunged, and without any warning, Serge ran straight out the door.

I didn’t even have time to feel dumbfounded.

‘You bastard, wait for me!’

Because I was too busy running after him.

Creak, bang―!

The moment we barely made it through the entrance, the double doors slammed shut behind us with a loud crash.

Naturally, it was Serge’s doing.

I pulled the handkerchief away from my face and gasped for breath.

Then I glared up at him.

“Huff, huff… Would it kill you to warn me before you run?!”

“Too slow. If you keep hesitating like that, you’ll get torn apart, Ducal Lady.”

Ignoring my complaint, he immediately turned and began climbing the stairs.

Bang, bang! Crash―!

Just as he said, the wooden door shook violently as if it would break at any moment under the Corrupted pounding on it.

‘If you were going to run like this anyway, why did you release them, you lunatic!’

Swallowing the curses rising to my tongue, I hurried after him up the stairs.

84%

Just from using his ability a little, his level had already risen.

Before this already unhinged man reached full rampage, the best option was to get out of here first.

But.

Tap, tap!

“Stop!”

Before we could even climb one full floor, our path was blocked by two of those dreadful white-robed figures.

‘What is this. A ghost concept?’

One was a woman with long dark brown hair hanging loose and disheveled down to her waist.

The other was a man with blond hair and orange eyes.

Strangely, unlike the others, they weren’t wearing their hoods.

The reason soon became clear.

67% / 75%

The numbers floating clearly above their heads.

‘Awakeners.’

Judging by their high levels, they were experienced users who had used their abilities often.

Looking down at Serge and me as we halted, the man held out one hand.

“Token.”

“……”

“Show proof that you’re a believer of the Sephirot Church.”

“Hmm… a token.”

Standing two steps ahead of me, Serge touched his chin and trailed off.

I was planning to wait for a chance to warn him that they were Awakeners and to be careful.

“I don’t have any token. But I do have something that proves I’m useful instead…”

“What?”

The man frowned at the strange remark.

‘What nonsense is he saying…’

I was just as bewildered, but my thoughts stopped there.

Whoosh―!

Suddenly, an invisible force lifted my body into the air and hurled me straight toward the Awakeners!

“Take them down, Ducal Lady!”

“…Your Highness! They’re Awakeners, AAHHH―!”

My body shot forward like a bullet, completely against my will.

Of course I screamed.

And it wasn’t only because of the lunatic who had just thrown me with telekinesis.

In that brief moment, as I was forcibly launched toward the enemy.

Ssssh, ssssssh…!

The woman’s loose hair rose into the air as if dancing like a ghost, then surged toward me all at once as if it were alive!
