Adelio made a show of fanning himself with one hand. Enoch flinched. Seeing Enoch’s brow tightly furrowed in displeasure, Adelio grinned, tossed his tie onto the floor, and planted one knee on the bed.

The mattress sank beneath his every movement. Adelio slowly approached Enoch on his knees.

Enoch kept scooting backward as he watched Adelio. His trembling eyes plainly showed how hard he was trying to remain calm.

At a loss, Enoch’s gaze rapidly swept his surroundings. He thought he would be alright if he could just get off the bed.

But even that was within Adelio’s expectations. Adelio leisurely watched the anxious Enoch.

Enoch glanced at Adelio and swallowed dryly.

‘This man is more skilled in hand-to-hand combat than I am, so I can’t move carelessly. I have no choice but to watch for an opportunity.’

If the man was going to lose his mind, couldn’t he at least do it quietly? What had Enoch done to deserve being caught up in this? If Adelio had been someone who listened to reason, Enoch would have tried to resolve matters through a proper conversation long ago. But Adelio was not such a person.

Enoch studied his mood for a long while. Then Adelio abruptly extended an arm and carelessly tapped Enoch’s cheek with his index finger.

“By the way, Sir Enoch. What could you possibly have imagined in that little head of yours to get so startled?”

“I imagined nothing.”

“No. Your reaction earlier was extraordinary. It was almost as though you thought I meant to do something terrible-”

“I never thought that! Don’t make baseless accusations!”

“Hmm? Why are you getting so agitated? If you didn’t, then you didn’t. Calm down. Your face is red.”

Enoch whipped his head away from the hand tapping his cheek.

“Would you please move your hand?”

“Why? Do you dislike it?”

And then another tap. Why had Enoch even bothered to ask when Adelio never even pretended to listen no matter what he said?

Reminding himself that people avoided filth out of disgust, not fear, Enoch turned his cheek from side to side. Yet Adelio’s hand stubbornly followed it.

Irritation surged within him. ‘What is wrong with him?’ Enoch firmly suppressed it, maintained as composed an expression as he could, and gave a quiet cough.

Only then did Adelio finally stop touching his cheek.

“Why? Are you irritated?”

“……”

“Does it annoy you?”

“……”

“Are you wondering why in the world I’m doing this?”

Enoch did not answer. When standing before a beast with bloodred eyes, one must never make even the smallest sound.

If he revealed the slightest opening, the beast would bare its teeth and pounce without allowing him a chance to escape. Yes, exactly as it was doing now.

Adelio gazed languidly at the silent Enoch, then caressed his cheek. His cheek, his ear, and then the nape of his neck. Long white fingers wandered carelessly over Enoch’s body.

Startled, Enoch hurriedly tried to stop that hand, but Adelio did not budge. Instead, he merely brushed his fingers gently over Enoch’s pale nape once more.

“I felt the same way when I was told you’d gone to Isabel.”

Enoch did not understand at once when he heard the unfamiliar name. But then he realized it was the First Princess’s name.

“I was irritated. Even Leo’s insistence that I had work to do was intolerably annoying, and I was furious that you had abandoned me and chosen Isabel. That is why I’m doing this.”

“……”

“Sir Enoch, do you know how worried I was? How I fretted that Isabel might do something to you? Yet you don’t understand how I feel and just look at me as though you can’t trust me. My heart ached terribly.”

His expression was mournful and pitiable, and even his eyes were damp as he gazed at Enoch.

If someone opened the door that instant and saw the scene, nine out of ten people would probably assume Enoch had done something terrible to Adelio.
