By Some Unbelievable Twist, I Became the Villainess’s Older Brother - Chapter 3.1
Jaeyi was a little flustered. The old woman seemed hard of hearing. Without properly hearing anything he said, she simply kept thanking him over and over.
For some reason, Jaeyi began to feel anxious. The chime stopped, and the traffic light soon turned red. The cars that had been waiting for the signal began honking wildly.
Jaeyi bowed his head toward the cars in apology, then gave a vague “Yes, yes” to the old woman, who continued saying only what she wanted to say. He hurriedly guided her across the crosswalk.
Before long, they finally reached the other side. Jaeyi was relieved.
‘Whew. At least we made it across in time.’
Only then did Jaeyi smile brightly and hand the bag of tangerines back to the old woman.
That was when it happened.
A truck came racing toward the old woman’s side. The way it kept swerving was extremely strange.
‘What is that? It’s almost as if the brakes have failed…’
Wait, failed brakes? Horrified, Jaeyi quickly grabbed the old woman’s arm and pushed her farther onto the sidewalk. Then, just as he was about to leap out of the way himself.
―Thud!
The sound of a watermelon splitting open came from somewhere. That was not all. He heard earsplitting screams, frantic shouts for help, and voices calling for an ambulance.
It felt as though his entire body had been torn apart. Through his blurred vision, he saw people running toward him.
Only then did Jaeyi realize that he was lying on the asphalt, unable to move so much as one hand.
Were his eyes open or closed? Was he alright or not… His breath caught in his throat.
It was unbearable. It hurt enough to kill him. Drowsiness kept washing over him, making him want to close his eyes.
‘It hurts so much. I feel like I’m dying…’
A voice brushed past his ears, telling him that he absolutely must not close his eyes. But he couldn’t endure any longer.
Jaeyi lost consciousness. The last thing he saw was the tangerines scattered and crushed across the ground.

Jaeyi slowly lifted his heavy eyelids and struggled to see what lay before him.
Then he flinched in shock. He hurriedly sat up and stared blankly around him.
“…What? Where in the world am I?”
Startled, Jaeyi rubbed his eyes. As his blurred vision slowly cleared, he calmly looked around once more.
It was an extraordinarily lavish room. Its sheer size went without saying, and everything down to the tables and armchairs looked luxurious.
Furniture unlike anything he had seen in his life, an enormous room, and the extremely uncomfortable clothes he was wearing now.
…What was all this? With a blank expression, Jaeyi touched the top he had on.
Even to Jaeyi’s untrained eye, every item appeared expensive. More importantly, he had certainly never bought any of them. After staring blankly for a moment and trying to make sense of the situation, he realized one thing.
‘This isn’t my room.’
…But then where in the world was he?
Very carefully, Jaeyi pushed aside the covers and set his feet on the floor, which was covered in a plush carpet. A soft texture enveloped them.
‘Why is it so soft?’
After startling himself yet again, Jaeyi felt a little embarrassed for no reason. He quietly closed his mouth and put on the fur slippers lined up beside the bed.
The slippers fit perfectly, as though they had always belonged to him. Jaeyi stared blankly down at his feet, then looked around the room again.
Everything in the room was antique furniture that seemed quite old. A full-length mirror stood on one side.
After thinking hard, Jaeyi walked toward the mirror. When he stood before it, he could only suck in a sharp breath.
The figure reflected in the glass was completely different from the one Jaeyi knew. Neither the face nor the body was his. Even the hands and feet belonged to someone else.
“Ah! What— this?!”
A shrill yelp burst from Jaeyi’s mouth. The voice was slightly higher than his usual one. Jaeyi flinched and grabbed his throat.
‘Even my voice is different!’
He couldn’t begin to understand what had happened. Who in the world was this person in the mirror? Was he seeing things? How had this happened?
Reincarnation? Transmigration? The absurd stories he had seen online floated through his mind. But none of those possibilities was easy to accept.
Jaeyi clutched his throbbing head. Then he exhaled steadily and recalled what had happened before he collapsed.
He had crossed the road and helped an old woman who dropped her tangerines. Then, just as he finished crossing and was handing them back, a swerving truck had suddenly come at them. And then the truck. The truck had… hit him.
