“Sorry? Who are you?”

“My younger brother is staying here. I haven’t seen him in quite a while. Would it be difficult for me to meet him?”

The servant, who had no idea, casually spoke to me as if I were just a family member of one of the hired workers living in the house.

I’d hoped to find someone who was a bit careless, but I didn’t expect it to be this easy. The only annoying thing was how unnecessarily he kept flirting.

“It’s working hours right now, so everyone’s pretty busy… Want me to check quietly for you? But if you go out with your brother, how about I tag along? You haven’t been to the capital much, right?”

“It’s been a while since I’ve been in the capital, yes.”

“Oh, so you’re agreeing? Haha, you can look forward to it! I know a few good taverns. You’ll have fun.”

I really didn’t want to play along with such obvious ulterior motives, so I just ignored him a few times. Only then did he seem to remember to ask,

“By the way, what’s your brother’s name?”

“Hys.”

“Hys? I don’t think I’ve heard that name before. Anyway, come on in. I’ll show you around the Lorraine estate. Of course, it’s only because it’s me, so keep it a secret.”

Completely captivated by my face, the guy went out of his way to help me when he didn’t need to.

Thanks to him, it was incredibly easy to get inside and scope out the layout of the mansion.

“Come to think of it, I don’t even know your name. Should I guess?”

“Go ahead, if you can. I’m actually pretty curious what you’ll come up with.”

“For girls as pretty as you, parents usually name them after flowers. Isn’t it Daisy?”

“Oh, that’s pretty close.”

“Wow, it really is Daisy? This must be fate. What do you think?”

Men really do have a habit of throwing around the word ‘fate’ far too easily. What do I think? I’m on the verge of changing a future where I die, do you really think something like fate can stop me?

While enduring his boring attempts to hit on me, I finally caught sight of a familiar head of pale silver-blue hair in the corner of my vision. It was the training area.

When I turned my head in that direction, the servant shook his head quickly.

“Ah, you don’t want to go there. These days, the Count and the Young Master have been putting the kid who lives here through nonstop training, trying to get him to manifest.”

“Training? What does that have to do with not being able to go over there?”

“There’s a lot of rough stuff for a girl to see… Oh, do you want to see the greenhouse instead? I think that’d suit you better… Huh? Daisy?”

Ignoring his call, I walked straight toward the training yard with steady, purposeful steps.

Maybe surprised by my unexpectedly fast pace, the servant hurried after me, anxiously trying to stop me for fear that the Count or his son might see us.

“Daisy, it’s really not good over here. L-Let’s just go somewhere else…”

But I stopped in my tracks, tilting my head slightly, not caring who might see.

“Hm.”

So this is what they call training? Looked to me like someone was wielding a weapon and beating another person without restraint.

With a calm face, I gradually took in the scene. My one and only remaining family member was being mercilessly beaten with a wooden sword.

That pale sky-blue hair. It was the hair I used to tease him about for being pretty, the hair I’d brushed with my own hands. Now, there was no shine to it at all. How long had it been neglected?

His arms and legs were so thin they looked frail, clearly from not being fed properly. On top of that, he wore a shabby gray shirt, more like rags, and torn pants. As if that wasn’t enough, every time the Count’s son struck him with the wooden sword, red welts and bruises spread across his skin.

Utterly defenseless, my baby brother finally seemed to lose all strength in his legs and collapsed to the dirt, rolling over as if momentarily unconscious. I looked up at the sky for a moment as I watched him fall.

Guides are trained to control their emotions.

But really, how many people could suppress their anger in a moment like this? The sight of wounds and dark bruises all over him made me instinctively scowl.
