How the Villainous Consort Avoids His Death Ending - Chapter 26.2
“Excuse me, young master.”
Someone cautiously called out to me from behind. There shouldn’t be anyone here in Belforte who knew me……. Then again, that was my perspective, and this place was essentially the home base of the original Ruellin. It was possible that my face was fairly well known here.
“Are you perhaps Ruellin of the Elsworth Viscountcy…… no, Your Highness, Grand Consort Ruellin?”
As I thought, it was indeed the case.
Having been caught in the downpour at sea after leaving the Northern Continent, my cloak was soaked through and had not dried properly. I had pulled the hood deeply over my head to hide my disheveled appearance, yet somehow they recognized me.
Embarrassed, my cheeks flushed. Hesitating, I turned to look at the person. A young man, appearing to be in his late twenties, brightened visibly and bowed his head.
“I am Sawyer, young master. Do you remember me?”
“If you are Sawyer…….”
Judging by the way he threw out just his first name without a family name, he seemed to be a commoner. I tilted my head, thinking he might not be someone Ruellin would know. The man hurriedly added.
“I met you when assisting at the Elsworth Trading Company. Not long ago, I offered my final respects to the Viscount and then went independent to handle small tasks. You…… or rather, Your Highness, the Grand Consort, may not remember a worker like me…….”
“No, it’s just that it has been a long time, so I didn’t recognize you at first. But now that you mention it, I do. Have you been well all this time?”
In truth, this was the first time I, not the original Ruellin, had seen him. Still, since he seemed so delighted, I could not pretend ignorance and offered a casual greeting.
Moreover, the name sounded somewhat familiar to me. Perhaps it was rare for a commoner to have such a name, which made it more striking.
He might even be a character from the original story. If so, that would mean he was no ordinary person.
As I traced my memory and gave a light smile, Sawyer’s face immediately brightened.
“It is an honor, young master. I wondered how you have been since your marriage……. You have become even more beautiful. I almost did not recognize you. Of course, you were elegant before as well.”
“Ha ha……”
I thought maybe he almost did not recognize me because I was so disheveled. He was cheerful and easygoing. Embarrassed, I let out a nervous laugh.
“What business do you have? Your Highness, Grand Consort, you are not idle.”
Then, Sir Mildred, who usually remained quietly at his post, suddenly stepped forward to urge Sawyer along. Gehardt, who had been unable to hide his displeasure from earlier, also intervened, expressing his outrage.
“What do you mean, you lowly worker, trying to act so boldly toward the Grand Consort? You are not someone who can treat him as you please.”
“Your Highness, Grand Consort, please return to the fleet. His Highness is worried.”
“…….”
Even Sir Johannes, who rarely spoke, added his voice. I was more surprised than Sawyer. Were they all protesting because the Northern Continent wool had failed to sell?
Sawyer, a commoner, looked flustered as the Hezekian knights crowded around him, his expression darkening. Then a calm but firm voice came from above.
“Let’s hear what the matter is.”
“Y-Your Highness?”
Unexpectedly, Tristan, whom I thought was quietly waiting with the fleet, appeared. Poor Sawyer’s face turned completely pale, and his fingers trembled.
“Y-Your, Your, Your, Your Highness……?”
“I said, state your business, Meyer.”
“I am Sawyer, Your Highness.”
Even after correcting him, Tristan’s expression suggested it did not matter. What did matter then?
“Your Highness. How could I try to act boldly toward the Grand Consort? You are mistaken.”
“I will judge whether it is bold or not. So, what is your business?”
“Th-That is……”
“You called the Grand Consort of Hezekia here with no business?”
Finally, Tristan rattled the sword at his waist. He had not appeared when necessary, but now he was picking a fight with someone innocent. Perhaps he was upset that the Grand Consort of Hezekia had been treated rudely. The person who truly deserved reprimanding was the exchange manager acting arrogantly inside. All Tristan had to do was enter the building, yet here he was causing a scene on the street.
