Noah sat at his desk again today, writing a letter to Aiden as though keeping a diary. Then he gathered a week’s worth of letters together and went to Johan’s room.

“Johan.”

Noah knocked carefully and called out to Johan. Johan opened the door a crack and laughed at Noah in disbelief.

“Here to ask me to deliver letters again?”

“Yes.”

When Noah smiled bashfully, sorry to be asking again, Johan stamped his foot in frustration and began scolding Noah.

“You really are devoted. That noble Crown Prince hasn’t replied even once, and you still want to keep sending them?”

“Well… Aiden has become the Crown Prince, so he must not have the time to write back.”

“Then cut it down to once a month. No, once a week.”

“Since I’m going out to the village anyway, please.”

Johan beat his own chest with his fist, but still accepted Noah’s letters. Noah apologized for coming at a late hour and always asking favors, then turned to leave. But that was when it happened. Noah’s eyes caught sight of the abbot hurrying toward him from the center of the corridor.

“Abbot.”

“Noah.”

The abbot spoke to Noah with an urgent face.

“It seems a few enemy soldiers who appeared in the border region have slipped all the way into the village here. It will take time for our army to arrive, so our order of holy knights has gone ahead to hold them off.”

“Is that so? Were many of the knights hurt?”

Noah was worried that the war in the border region was reaching even this remote place.

“No, there’s no word yet that our order has been hurt. But it seems some of the villagers were injured in the enemy attack.”

“Understood. I’ll prepare right away.”

At that moment, Johan came out of his room and added.

“Abbot, I’ll go with Noah too.”

“You too, Johan? Thank you.”

“No matter how freely Noah can use healing magic, there’s no helping it when his stamina runs out.”

Noah and Johan began preparing skillfully, as though this was not their first time.

A short while later, Noah arrived safely at the village with Carno’s help and walked toward the place where the injured had gathered.

“How many people were hurt?”

“This time it’s twenty or thirty, a rather large number.”

“Ah… I see.”

The large and small clashes in the border region had grown frequent. In his previous life, Aiden, the Emperor of Fire, had stopped a great war that broke out not long after he came of age. After that, had there been no civil war between the Emperor of Fire Aiden and the nobles, the Liber Empire, with no external enemies, would have been at peace. Which meant the unstable situation in the border region would continue until Aiden came of age.

Noah’s heart grew complicated with these and other thoughts, and his eyes took in the village hall, broken here and there. Inside it lay the villagers who had been injured by the enemy’s invasion.

“Hoo…”

Noah let out a sigh and focused his mind.

Aiden did not even know what war meant. But when he came to his senses, Aiden was standing at the very front of the ranks of the army commanded by Grand Duke Humore.

“Your Highness the Crown Prince.”

“Yes, Grand Duke Humore.”

Before he knew it, the day had grown dark, and among the soldiers pitching camp on the mountain ridge, Grand Duke Humore approached Aiden and spoke.

“This is a battlefield. It means the Crown Prince of the empire, who has gone to war in place of His Majesty the Emperor, must not show weakness.”

“Yes, I will do my best.”

Grand Duke Humore gazed steadily at Aiden like he was looking down at a dignified child, and smiled with satisfaction.

“Rest comfortably today. We will reach the border of the Klades Kingdom within three days.”

Aiden gave Grand Duke Humore a light bow and entered the barracks. Then the knights of Grand Duke Humore, who had been standing at a distance, approached.

“Grand Duke, we have received word that the army led by the prince of Klades will strike our main camp tonight.”

“Leave only the Crown Prince and part of the royal guard, and have most of our soldiers withdraw and then strike them.”

Grand Duke Humore gave the order to the knights escorting him at his side, wearing a vile smile. It was Grand Duke Humore, laying a plan to hand the Crown Prince over to the enemy in this battle and annihilate the off-guard enemy forces in turn.

“Hoo…”

At that moment, Aiden, participating in war for the first time, could not sleep from a tension he could not name. Aiden lay on a bed that was crude beyond words and pictured himself leading an army and holding back the enemy.

“Strike the Liber army!”

“Waaah!”
