The people standing beside the bed firmly held down the thrashing patient. Noah, who had been staring blankly at the half-dazed patient, soon began to focus.

* * *

Five years later.

In the city streets a little ways from the imperial palace at the center of the capital, Kalis, splendid taverns stood in rows. People who had finished a week’s work began to gather at the taverns one by one. Each of them held a glass of rum and spilled out stories they had picked up here and there.

“They say we won again in this war?”

“So they say. It seems there’s no one in this world who can defeat that monster.”

“Right! Don’t they say that if that monster uses fire magic just once, an entire camp of an army is wiped out?”

“I heard he shows no mercy whatsoever to the enemy.”

“That’s right, that’s right! It’s fortunate that the monster is the Crown Prince of our empire. Otherwise, we might all have burned to death.”

“Anyway, they say that monster is holding his coming-of-age ceremony this time.”

“Is that so? Then the imperial house will try to actively look into a marriage match for the monster…. But who would want to marry that terrifying monster?”

At the center of every story was the monster. By now, that fact was nothing new.

The monster.

That was the nickname of Aiden, the Crown Prince of the Liber Empire. At fifteen, Aiden, who had overcome a crisis in his first battle and returned alive, learned politics at a rapid pace between the Emperor and Grand Duke Humore, and within the imperial palace. Also, because he always returned from the battlefield having sounded the drum of victory, Crown Prince Aiden’s standing became more solid than ever. At the same time, the Liber Empire’s power expanded greatly, and its status rose even higher.

The more Crown Prince Aiden grew, the more Grand Duke Humore’s standing inevitably became increasingly constrained.

“Aiden. I must find that bastard’s weakness.”

Grand Duke Humore paced about anxiously, muttering as if to himself, and downed his wine in one gulp. Mateo, the butler standing quietly behind him, quickly refilled his glass with wine.

“They say he won again this time as well.”

The captain of the knight order, who had entered late at Grand Duke Humore’s summons, gave his answer as he came into the dining room.

“Not news like that he won, but something exciting like that he died or was injured… is there none?”

“…I apologize.”

Grand Duke Humore made no  effort to hide his displeasure, and  clicked his tongue.

“After a war ends, soldiers are always deployed to handle the aftermath… but they say strange things have been happening for some time now.”

“What is it?”

“They say almost all the people living in the region where the war occurred have been cleanly healed.”

“Is it healing magic?”

“That’s right. They say that on days when too many people are injured, he even scatters a Rain Shower.”

“A Rain Shower?”

Grand Duke Humore fell silent for a moment. He was watching the Crown Prince’s surroundings through the spy he had planted.

“There was no word that he kept a healer by his side….”

“I also find that strange. But what is certain is that the people of the territory hold very favorable public sentiment toward the healer.”

“That’s only natural. He heals the injured and the sick, after all….”

“It seems the one who enjoys the reflected benefit thanks to that healer’s good deeds is the Crown Prince.”

“He’s a lucky bastard in many ways.”

Grand Duke Humore wore a bitter expression and drained his wine.

“Ben.”

“Yes, speak.”

“From the Vertex ducal house to the monastery, investigate thoroughly how Aiden has lived.”

“May I ask for what reason?”

“A weakness.”
